Selling on Ebay, second income, do I have to pay tax?
I am selling stuff on e-bay that I buy from America & make a profit on. At the moment I am making about £300 a week profit. I already have a full time job but I want to know if I have to register to pay tax on a second income?
I have asked a friend & they said I need to be earning over £60,000 a year on e-bay before I register for tax. Is this true?

your friend is wrong, because you have a job, any extra income needs to be taxed, you will need to register with the inland revenue as being self employed for this job and complete a tax return at the end of each tax year to declare your addition income.

The 60,000 is in reference to charging VAT, if you were selling goods to that value in a year then you would need to register for a VAT number and charge VAT on any sales and reclaim VAT on purchases. Given the value of profit you are making it seems likely you would hit 60,000 sales in a year. You only need to register in the month that your yearly sales to date reach that value but you can register sooner.

The fines for not paying tax are very large and if you ignore paying tax deliberately it is also a criminal offense that you can go to jail for, don't wait any longer and speak to the inland revenue today and discuss how it will work best for you.

Even if you only made a fiver you are supposed to declare it. That's if you are buying and selling stuff as a business rather than selling your own old crap.

You will get into trouble if you get caught.

If you are selling items on eBay for profit then you have to pay tax.

Your friend is confused. If your income exceeds £67,000 you have to register for VAT. You are already liable for paying both income tax and national insurance at the the amount you are turning over.

HMRC do check eBay for people with lots of feedback to check that they are paying tax.

You need to get in touch with HMRC to work out how much tax you need to pay - as at the moment - you are breaking tax law.

Sorry mate!

you have to pay tax, also if you are selling from a rented or council house you can be done for that too, and if you were claiming any benifits they can also be stopped, my mate a single mom in a council house was took to court and she was only making 40 pound per week,

During this tax year you are allowed to earn a total income of £6035 before you pay tax and £5435 from each job before you pay National Insurance. Anything you earn above this will be deducted at 20% and 11% respectively. Also anything you earn above £40835, this includes your tax free amount, you will be liable to pay tax on at 40%. However you will be able to deduct allowable expenses from your self employment income but you will also have to pay £2.30 a week Class 2 national insurance per annum.

You should contact the inland revenue to register as self employed and request a tax return. Check http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/nic.htm for further tax rates. Hope this helps and sorry if I've brought bad news

Well I say the hell with them, you've found a way to make some extra cash and I think it's very unlikely that you'll be caught.
The government is always ripping us little people of left right and center and they always put there needs first instead of giving the people what they want.
I say keep doing what your doing and if you get caught just feign ignorance, it's not like there gonna put you in jail as there full as it is.

I used to make a good profit on eBay, although not nearly as much as £300 per week, by buying items from a market and re-selling them on eBay. My Dad (who's quite a clued-up and useful man when it comes to random things!) actually advised me to possibly telling the 'tax man' about it. I never did, and continued to make an extra living on eBay for a few months. I didn't get caught, and nothing ever came of it. If you've been getting 'away with it' for some time now, I'd continue to go about i the way you are, and hope for the best! After all, we pay them enough I think!
