Senators Clinton and Obama claim that they will abolish the tax cuts for the rich?
What tax cuts? The rich have a 35% income tax rate, plus a 15% capital gains tax. I'm not rich, I make $31,000 a year after taxes, I just want to know what these tax cuts are that they're getting. It seems to me that the rich pay the majority of the taxes.

A colleague of mine made a bipartisan tounge-in-cheek observation several decades ago, which none the less I have found to contain a good deal of truth.

He said that you can always tell which party sponsored a particular piece of tax legislation. The Republicans always want to help the little guy, with the definition of a little guy being anyone making less than $2 million per year.

Conversely, the Democrats always want to make the rich pay their fair share, with the definition of rich being anyone working 40 hours a week at more than minimum wage.

10% of the population pays over 90% of all taxes, so you're right.

The problem is that the tax cuts they are talking about eliminating ("letting expire", which sounds a lot better than "I'm going to raise taxes") affect the regular family, not rich ones. There have been a lot of media distortions claiming that the Bush tax cuts were for the rich - they went to people of all incomes, including many people who now don't have to pay any tax but will if these "tax cuts for the rich" are dropped.

Two facts:

1) 90+% of the Bush taxes cuts went to the rich.

2) The country is spending more money now than it is bringing.

Some future President, whether it's the next one or not, will have to raise taxes. Senator's Clinton and Obama are just being honest. Sometimes the truth hurts and truth is that the fiscal mismanagement of the Bush administration has damaged this country and it will take years to recover.

They are hoping to raise the high tax bracket back to 40% + make the capital gains tax 25%.

they want tax rates to return to 39.6% for the "rich" plus 25% on capital gains and dividends.

never mind that the capital gains and dividend tax increases will make the stock markets fall and thus the retirement plans of every middle class American out there.

and never mind that capital is what buys the trucks, tools and equipment that every American worker uses on his job [and gets paid extra to use] -- they're anti-capitalism.

This isn't really a tax question, but....

The 10% "rich" who pay 95% of the tax have only 80% (estimated) of the income.

I think Obama wants to eliminate the capital gains exclusion, while Clinton merely wants to eliminate it for those in the 28% tax bracket or higher (which is not "rich"). They both want to increase the tax rates for the upper brackets, possibly to as much as 50%.

Campaign promises usually never become realities. Don't hold your breath waiting for this one.. Actually You should probably expect a tax rate hike if a democrat becomes president to pay for all of the socialist programs they are recommending (which probably won't pass through congress or the senate either). Gotta enjoy governmental bureaucracy.

Some very wealthy people live off of the dividends from their stocks and do not have to work. The tax rate on these dividends is only 15%. Now that really sucks.

A few years ago President Bush eliminated the inheritance tax (aka "death tax") for almost everyone, except those with estates more than like $5 million. I believe what Clinton and Obama are saying is that they will reinstate those inheritance/estate taxes.
