Yes - if they had a fair recruitment process and the Italian workers are the most qualified for the job - then yes they should employ Italian workers. That is what being part of Europe means.
However the fact that these jobs were not advitised in the UK - should be investigated. I for one will not be using Total until they back down on this and allow British workers the opportunity to apply for jobs. Today I sent the following email to Total explaining my reasons - I urge other to do the same.
British Workers for British Jobs
I have seen on the news recently the protests outside your plant in Immingham Lincolnshire.
I completely support the workers who are demanding an opportunity to be considered for employment at the site.
As the company that awarded this contract can you confirm why you agreed to and continue to support an organisation which is using racist recruitment criteria in refusing British workers the opportunity to apply for jobs?
Furthermore can you confirm what action has been taken to discipline the Italian workers who were photographed 'flipping the bird' on national TV. Is this really the image your company want to portray?
Until you as a company put pressure on your contractors to offer the opportunity to all workers of the EU (including British) to work at your sites I will be boycotting your product and will be urging my friends, family and co workers to do the same.
I look forward to your comments and assurances of fairness.

If Gormless Gordon Clown, his useless puppet Darling and B Liar had not ruined the country things might be different.
If they had sorted the country out 12 years ago we could now be a high skills, low tax, good education, money in the bank, minimal debts country.
Our taxes would have been lower meaning we could have lower wages (but worth more) and the youngsters coming into the market would be well educated.
Why shouldn't Total bring in cheaper skilled workers? Blame the Government for bad leadership, not the company! |

no most country's only let outsiders in if there is a skill shortage and in this case there are plenty of people willing to do the jobs , as these jobs are well paid.this government will not look out for the rights of the people of this country,total are a big company with lots of influence so do any thing they want |

Total are not employing any Italians.
I don't know the exact details, but Total had a requirement for work to be carried out by an external contractor. They went to open tender, and an Italian company won the tender. That Italian company obviously then used their own existing staff to carry out the work. That is why they bid in the first place - to bring in work to their organisation so they could continue to provide work for their own employees.
The point is, British companies could have, and I assume did, bid for the contract. They were unsuccessful because an Italian company could do a better and/or cheaper job.
The British companies were not good enough - end of story. |
