Should Britain Join the Euro?
Is Britain in a financial posistion to Join the Euro and what benefits will Britain gain and the British people by changing currencies.
If Taxes go down and VAT is abolished I`m all for it.

There is a strong long-term argument for the UK to adopt the Euro.I believe that Britain will eventually adopt it, or even tie its rate to that of the Euro, like Denmark. To make this politically possible, however, a lot of the small-minded prejudice as quoted in tabloid journalism needs to be seen for what it is.
If the UK did adopt the Euro transactions costs for business will reduce which will help trade and longer term employment. It will also help travellers who will no longer have to pay costly foreign exchange costs. Currently the interest rates are a lot lower in Euro zone countries than in the UK.

As for sovereignty, its naïve to think that any economy can operate independently. Ok, so the Euro central bank will be setting the interest rates in the UK, as opposed to the BOE, but really, how much autonomy does the bank of England have in a global economy? And I for one have never woken up -looked at the money in my purse and suddenly forgot where I was or what language I spoke. It’s an argument that does not deserve discussion.

Other people quote when the Euro was first introduced the price of everything went up, but this is not the currency fault, but rather greedy shopkeepers. The recent rise in the value of the Euro has actually made goods cheaper (but I’ll admit you wouldn’t know it at times). I’m not British, and don’t really care if Britain joins the Euro or not, but I get annoyed when I read stupid xenophobic arguments – such as a few already quoted here.

The EU wants to change the VAT rates and rules to a standard rate across Europe, and to stop 'carousel fraud', but the UK & EU could not reach agreement on the best way forward! The average VAT rate Europe wide would be lower, and the UK would save millions per annum if carousel fraud was eliminated.

A survey of British citizens found that most people didn't want the Euro as they were happy with the Giro

Dafydd
Yes. It is now a strong currency with the £ and $ getting weaker. We are impoverishing ourselves by sticking with the pound.

I don't think Britain is yet in a position to join the Euro and I hope it will never do so. I have travelled extensively around Europe for the past 40 years and I see that, as soon as a country changes to the Euro, the cost of living goes up like a rocket. Not long ago I read that the Italians were so displeased with inflation under the Euro that they were hoping to revert to the lira.

You might argue that wages go up in line with inflation, and so they do - after a time lag! - but as people are living increasingly longer there will be more and more pensioners as time goes by, and their - and also your future - income is not going to increase as much as inflation does.

No NO! Forget the economic arguments, they are totally irrelevant. It is yet another avenue toward a Federal Europe and the loss of British Sovereignty. I am unclear as to why you think VAT and taxes will go down. With respect, I think that you are looking at this issue from too narrow a perspective. The EU is a left wing totalitarian regime. Forget about Britain and forget about democracy once in that club. You can't remain as an independent Nation State without your own currency.

I am still reading some frighteningly naive arguments, it really is a worry, and I fear for the future of Britain with so many people not prepared to look after its interests.

yes if taxes do go down and VAT abolished but i doubt that will ever happen under any government!

I believe the American expression is...

HELL NO!

Do you *honestly* believe that the European Union, once it has England by the pocketbook, is going to lower your taxes or *EVER* give you back your sovereignty without paying for it in blood? If you do, you're dumber than a box of rocks.
