Should Federal Income Tax be abolished along with the IRS?

Re: Should the Federal Income Tax be abolished?
No. However, it should be revamped to greatly simplify the tax code. Basically, keep the graduated tax system, but eliminate all deductions except the standard deduction. The standard deduction should be raised to a point above poverty level. Eliminate all special tax rates, etc. The only additional thing I would keep would be for retirement savings.

Re: ...along with the IRS?
What makes you think the IRS and income taxes are inseparable? The IRS dates back to 1862 and was in existence for many years when the U.S. did not have income taxes. Contrary to what many people believe, other tax systems, i.e. fair tax, flat tax, etc., would continue to need some sort of agency to handle the collection and administration of the tax. I can agree that a simplified tax system, or alternative tax system could be administered by a smaller agency, but it would still need to exist.

Beth
Yes, it's an antiquated and overly complicated system. There must be a better way.

VATreasures
I think it should be reduced(especially at the lower levels) and offset with increases in corporate taxes and taxes on investments.

zmansgram@sbcglobal.net
I would think we would need some kind of tax system, but the system we have now is in need of revamping. We will always need some form of taxation to pay for all the government programs, to build highways, support military, etc.

Bubba Ho-Tepppppp
Yes. Our problem isn't just double taxation; taxes are exponentially compounded into the value of goods. This is our biggest source of inflation and our biggest smokescreen in front of how much money is actually collected.

if federal income taxes were abolishes we would be living in caves with nothing. We need taxes to run the country.

Your question is strange as it presumes both should be abolished and simultaneously.

L
Yeah it should and we should tell our congressmen to enact the "Fair Tax"

From what I understand, the income tax was only supposed to be a temporary taxation system in the 1940's.

But the United States government, like the free-money junkies they are, just don't want to quit robbing the American taxpayers so they can give away obscene amounts of money for ignorant causes.

Don't expect to see any kind of tax relief in this lifetime. If anything, it'll get worse.

Check out google video. Look for a video called
"America: Freedom to fascism"
