danielle j | Should I declare myself single or head of household on my withholding allowance certificate? |
I am a single woman who lives with her boyfriend and brings in the majority of the income to my home. Is it just easier to register myself as single? |

Yes. The law is as follows:
An unmarried taxpayer may qualify as a HOH by maintaining as his home a household that is the principal place of abode for more than half the year of a qualifying child of the taxpayer or a person who would be the taxpayer's qualifying child if the taxpayer hadn't released the dependency deduction to the noncustodial parent. < This is not you
However, the taxpayer won't qualify as HOH if the qualifying child is married at the close of the taxpayer's tax year, and isn't a dependent of the taxpayer because he filed a joint return or because he isn't a U.S. citizen. < This is not you
Also, an unmarried taxpayer may claim HOH status if he or she pays more than half of the cost of maintaining his or her home a household that is the principal place of abode for more than half the year of an individual for who the taxpayer may claim a dependency exemption. < This may apply if you support >50% of this person as then you can claim them as your dependent, otherwise this does not apply.
or maintains a household that for the tax year is the principal place of abode for either of his parents, if taxpayer is entitled to a dependency deduction for either parent < This is not you |

You are a single person and despite the fact you are playing house you are not the legal head of household; you are only single in the eyes of the IRS. |

You aren't head of household - you need a closely related person that you are supporting, and a boyfriend wouldn't count even if he had no income at all for the year. You'll file as single. |

Head of household is automatic audit.
Qualifying relative rules:
Not a qualifying child - The dependent cannot be a qualifying child of another taxpayer.
Gross Income – The dependent earns less than the personal exemption amount during the year. For 2007, this means the dependent earns less than $3,400.
Total Support – You provide more than half of the dependent's total support during the year.
Relationship – You are related to the dependent in certain ways.
Joint Return – If the dependent is married, the dependent cannot file a joint return with his or her spouse.
Citizenship – The dependent must be a citizen or resident alien of the United States, Canada, or Mexico. |

Nope - you have to have kids (dependents).
When my son turned 18, I could no longer claim him as a dependent (because he wasn't in school) yet I was providing for all his needs. Sucks. |

I think you are just declared as single. You boyfriend has no legal bearing on your tax return - so you can't claim head of household. |
