Should I file my own taxes online?
Hi all, im not sure if I should go to Hrblock to do my taxes this year, as I have done in the past. I dont have any dependents and my wife and I claim married 0 all year.
Should I keep going to Hrblock to file and pay $100+ each year or might it be cheeper to do it online with their tax tool for $14.99?
Thanks all for the help!

I used to get my taxes done through H&R Block for years. Then one year, I decided to try TurboTax. They let you completely prepare your return before you pay for it, so you plug numbers in to see what your return will be before you actually prepare it. Once I tried it, I bought it and have never looked back.

They ask you tons of questions, topic by topic, to find your deductions, which I like. Also, once your done, they skim over your numbers to make sure everything sounds ok. If it doesn't, they'll go through the section again with you. I believe this reduces your chances of an audit.

One thing to note though, H&R DOES have an audit assurance plan which I don't believe turbotax does. So as long as you carefully prepare your return you should be ok!! Plus, it's awesome not having to give $125 off the top of your return to the preparer!!

P.S. Use the same sign in name every year as they roll over the previous years' return info into the new one and even deducts the amount you paid TurboTax the previous year!!

the truth they dont want you to know you can file them on your own
the people that help you at the store are just filling out the interview questions on the computer for you but still verbally ask you the questions they are reading from the same screen you could be

yes, try turbotax, I've done it for the past two years, and found it very easy, I was able to start it, take care of kids in the meantime, and finish it when I had time. glad I didn't sit in those lines at H & R Block

I hate to pimp, but I've been using Turbo Tax online for years. I'll never pay an in-person service again unless I get some really complicated issues in my finances.

Sure, why not?

you might pay a hundred, at least you'll know its done right. for 15.00 you are not going to get much. basics only. tried quicken turbo last yr. gave me sons info. instead. used delux verision. so that should tell you something. are you itemizing or short form. if your status hasn't changed in past year it might work,

I think you should do it on line. Save your money.

Hi. I work for H & R Block, and I believe that if your taxes are simple enough you can do it with their online tools. However if you have multiple states you should come to the office, because a multiple state return may be confusing, other than that go right ahead and use the online tool. If you have any questions you can come to an H&R Block office and they will help you. And if worse comes to worse and you are completely stuck you can get your return done at the office and they will refund the money you pay for the online product.

Good Luck!!

I have gone online for the past 5 years with H&R Block and (knock on wood) have not had any problems. I have used their Basic filing and paid the 14.99, but found out last year that I fall within the income level to use them from the IRS's free file(go to irs.gov and check free file, there will be a list of companies you can file for free with as long as you meet their guidelines, H&R Block is one of them) Check that out at IRS.gov and good luck.
