They do offer advances, but you will pay dearly. It's like one of those payday loan deals. You'd be better off charging what you need on vacation and waiting for your refund. E-file is fastest. |

H&R Block is full of total blockheads. All they do is pop a few numbers into the PC and print out the form for you. Every number they put on there, they charge you for. It's the equivalent of going with a credit card company that charges you a $100 annual fee for a APR of 23%---absolute RIP-OFF.
This is NOT what REAL accountants do!!!!
For instance, H&R did my husbands tax return (while we were dating), and charged him $110 for something that anybody with basic mathskills could have done.
I was disgusted and took the same paperwork to my own accountant, and got him HUNDREDS more back!!! OMG, and he was only charged $65.
If you really only work one simple job and make like $24000 per year without owning property, have no car payment, or even rent, then do your numbers yourself.
But, you just may be better off finding a real accountant recommended by a friend or relative who has a strong stable income, investments, and is good with money. The accountant should have years of experience and be able to give you a comparison between how much you'd typically get back, and what they can do for you.
Any accountant worth their weight in salt will have that rapid refund offer with auto-deposit. Don't screw yourself!!!! |

Don't go to H&R - do your own taxes online
www.taxact.com is very easy and you'll get your TOTAL refund without paying H&R so much. |

I've helped a number of friends and clients "fix" their taxes after having them done by H&R Block. Their tax preparers usually have a short-training period, and are seasonal employees.
As for their "Refund Anticipation Loans" this is loan-sharking at it's worst. In addition to paying an absorbent amount for the tax preparation, you will then have to pay for the "quick" filing and then again for the loan. Total charges usually equal the equivalent of 502% annualized. You would be MUCH better off charging it and paying it off when your refund comes in or taking out a short-term loan with a bank or small finance company. Typically state limits are around the 25-35% mark and if you pay off early you'll really mostly be paying the paperwork fee of around $25-30 which is less than you pay for the loan filing fee with H&R Block. I'm not saying credit cards & loan companies are awesome but they are much better in terms of fees paid in this instance.
Depending on your circumstances I'd recommend you use the IRS Free-File option and do your taxes yourself. You won't get your money back the same day, but you will get it quickly (if you elect for direct deposit). For example if you file before Jan 29th your funds will be deposited on Feb. 6th. You'd only have been on vacation a couple of days - the money would be put right into your account, etc.
The only stipulation, as I think someone else pointed out, is if you owe back taxes or penalties this would be deducted from your deposit. However, that would be the case no matter who does your taxes. |

They over charge, and in order for them to give you a check the same day you would have to pay a very high fee for a refund anticipation loan |

Many tax preparers advertise instant refunds. Those are really what's called a refund anticipation loan or RAL, a very expensive loan from a bank associated with the preparer, that will be paid off when the IRS sends your refund. You have to qualify for the loan, so it's no sure thing that they'll approve you. |

Dear 4: H&R Block has a Refund Anticipation Loan which may be available the same day or 48 hours after your return is accepted by the IRS. You also can have your funds deposited on an Emerald Master Card which could be done while you are on vacation i.e. you would not have to come back into the office to get your money. Caution.. if you have an offset or some problem with other debts your refund could be delayed or not given to you.
This advice was prepared based on our understanding of the tax law in effect at the time it was written as it applies to the facts that you provide. Click on my profile to read more.
