chispa | Should I wait to file because of the economic stimulus plan? |
Should I wait to file my 07 taxes because of the economic stimulus plan? Or is this going to be completely seperate from my income tax return? I also realize that this isn't a done deal yet, but I'm just wondering. Also, I am single with one child, so does that mean I will get $900? And I also saw some guy spreading a rumor all over yahoo answers about this being an advance on our 08 return, and that whatever we get this year, we will get less from our 08 return. Where the heck did he get this from? |

The package that was recently passed by congress has absolutely nothing to do with your income taxes directly, in that, the credit is not assessed on to your refund. This is a credit from the federal government. The check will come directly from the feds. It is not assessed in your tax refund in anyway. I work in a tax office, and we were instructed today to provide our clients with this clarification.
Hope this helps. |

If you are due a tax refund under the current standard tax rules, I'd file as soon as you're able to do so. No point at all in making an interest-free loan to the U.S. Treasury. If you've got to pay an additional sum, I'd wait until April. Let the interest build in your account as long as possible.
The latest word I saw on the NYTimes page showed that stimulus payments are not expected possibly until May 2008.
"Under the plan, individuals would receive rebates of up to $600 and couples could receive $1,200, plus $300 per child, Paulson said. Rebates would be phased out for individuals earning more than $75,000 and couples earning more than $150,000. Individuals must earn at least $3,000 to get a $300 rebate.
Paulson said the rebate checks may be mailed 60 days after the proposal becomes law, possibly in May."
Notice the language says "individuals would receive...UP TO to $600." So it appears to me you could get the full amount of $600 or some lesser sum for yourself and an additional $300 for the little one. We'll all have to read the fine print when the Senate is finished working it over and the President signs off on the final version. Good luck! |

File your return as soon as possible. As the rebate will be a rebate on your 2007 taxes, you won't get it until you file your 2007 tax return. They are using the numbers from the 2007 tax return to determine the income limits.
As for the advance, there were some rumors in the press that the rebate may be an advance on your 2008 taxes, but from the details that was reported today in the news, it doesn't appear to. What the federal government is doing is effectively doing away with the 10% tax bracket for 2007. The last tax rebate that came out, it was treated as an advance from the next year's refund amount, so that is where the rumor started.. |

You should not wait to file, your taxes are due in April and the check for you from this plan won't be done until June or July.
I'm single with one also, and it looks like we'll get around 900, but don't count your chickens before they hatch...
Also, he got that from a few years ago when we got checks (I don't remember what for, mine was about 800) and then it affected our tax filing for that year.
Don't know about this yet, though... |

In theory you could get up to $600 for you and $300 for your child.
In theory if you file your 2007 tax return by 4/15, the check could be mailed to you in June. (They need your 2007 numbers to GUESTIMATE your 2008 income.)
Keep in mind, this is pretty much an an advance on your 2008 refund, so $900 now, $900 LESS later. |

Where in the world did you get the $600.00 for you? It was stated that "rebates of at least $300.00 for almost everyone earning a paycheck" and also "families with children would recieve an additional $300.00 per child"
That means $600.00 total for you and your child combined.
