Should dole scroungers get a pension when they retire?
not talking about people who claim benifits for illness, just the people who dont want to work. Would this encourage more people to get up and get a job?

The problem is who decides who CAN'T get a job, and who WON'T!
Not everyone is a scrounger, you know.
My Husband has been out of work several times in the 40 years he's been working and is claiming benefits now because believe me it isn't easy getting work when you are older! Oh and he did 15 years service in the RAF so think it's unfair to expect more from him!
He's qualified in several areas but he can't get a job in our area. As soon as they know his age, it's 'position filled'. I'm not in a full time job and with only 3 years to pension age not likely to be offered one! If you feel secure enough in your job, and earn enough to give yourself a decent pension then think yourself lucky!
We get very few benefits but we've worked most of those 40 years and more than paid for our pensions!

I guess its a catch 22, as if we dont help them they have no money so they live in poverty and cause strain on our social systems.

Maybe the best thing to do if that people are scrounger they need to get a good hard shock.

If they dont get a job within 4 weeks they have to do National service for 2 years, at least this would pay them and hopefully displine them to understand they cannot scrounge.

Also in doing this maybe those of us who work really hard and are taxed a fortune can have our taxes reducec as we are no paying for the scroungers.

Other counties have good National Service like Sweden.

If they can survive on benefits they can survive on a measley state pension too. It won't be much different for them.

im of the opinion that if you just dont want to work u shouldnt get any money from government full stop. there should also be more checks on people claiming money that dont work aswell. so no they shouldnt get any pension money as they havent earned it.

Onestep downfrom God
They will get a pension anyway!
As long as they're on the dole they'll receive full pension credits.

This is a morality question, and nothing to do with taxation, but I say hang the scroungers!!

Hello,

(ANS) OK!! Whats the definition of a dole scrounger then?

**The problem is that you can lead a horse to water but you cannot force it to drink !! YES! its a difficult issue.

**This problem or dilemma is exactly the same as people who commit a crime, you can can catch them, you can prosecute them, you can fine them, you can slap them in a prison cell for many many years.

But getting them to say sorry!! and genuinely mean it, feel sorry, TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY!! for what they did is another matter entirely.

So the same dilemma applies to people on the dole or who sign on or who are out of work for numerous reasons. Even if you were to force people into jobs they wont stay in them unless there is an incentive and that could be a financial one ?? Being better off financially by working is probably a good incentive but is it enough? thats harder to say.

No they shouldn't. When people who have worked all their lives get treated like dirt by the benefits systyem because they need to claim sick pay from the government for a short period while the long term dole scroungers get help with no questions asked. it's appalling. As a tax payer I think national service is the way to go,Iraq preferably, that'd make 'men' out of them!

Snakey B
Of course it won't. The prospect of dying of lung cancer at 65 doesn't stop people smoking at 20, so why would the prospect of starving to death at 65 make someone go out and get a job at 20? Either you have a long-term view about these things or you don't. You can't FORCE people to care.

Anyway, what would you have them do when it's too late to do anything about it - starve in the street? You want to be stepping over little old ladies in the gutter and laughing and saying "serves you right"?

If a person believes that £40 a week plus rent-free accomodation in the roughest part of town, or whatever it is that you get on the dole these days, is "beating the system" and being one of life's winners, then it just shows how truly crappy their available alternatives must be.

And if you think it's the Life of Riley then I have to wonder what cloud you have your head stuck in. You can't have ever been there yourself. When we're off work, it's because we're on holiday - we want to make the most of it, because our free time is limited, we've got a To Do list, we've saved up, we'll maybe go away somewhere. It's a little different when you have no money and nothing to do and the future stretches out in front of you for years and years with nothing in it apart from getting older. Watching daytime TV, sitting in Wetherspoons trying to make each pint last an hour, wandering round the local shopping centre... if it's that great a life, why aren't middle-class, educated people doing it?

As someone who earns well above minimum wage it's all very easy for me to say that I'd sooner work for a living and have a comfortable living followed by a comfortable retirement than sit on my backside in a council flat with my money always running out a couple of days before my giro arrives, but if my options were more limited e.g. I had no education or a criminal record or whatever, how can I say that I would still feel that way?

*disclaimer: all comments are based on the assumption that we are talking ONLY about "people who don't want to work"*

Never mind a pension, should they even get benefits if they don't want to work?

NOPE.

Do they now?

Maybe, but scroungers tend to be very shortsighted.

no they shouldn,t i don,t mind anyone who can,t work but the ones who DON,T want to work & think the world owes them a favour no way should they get money i know that sounds harsh ,but i work fulltime & i am worse off every month having to pay rent ,council tax bills etc ,i don,t smoke can,t afford to go out much & to see all these scroungers getting everything handed to them on a plate & having to do nothing to get it , something is far wrong with the system iv,e come down off my soap box now , but i'm sure many agree with me

Dinkie
I don't know if anything would motivate the scroungers. Once a scrounger always a scrounger.

theres no such animal as a dole scrounger except in your head, the unemployed pay their taxes to the queen just the same. the unemployed are now job seekers, seeking a job nowadays is a full time occupation, hope yours is safe?
