clare | Should i phone them? |
help plz ?? we have been financially skint as my partners been out of a job and my wages went on rent, bills, shopping and everything.
we didnt pay council tax.... they wrote letters, i tried phoning and explaining to them and tried to set up a payment plan thing but they wanted the whole lot
bailiff came round today when we werent in left a note sayig they wanted the whole £1700 in full or else theyd send round a removal van and that £345 would be added on for that.
what should we do. we cant pay that kind of money all upfront, yet i dont want to speak to or let the bailiff in our house. what should i do, this is not good just before xmas! i dont agree with paying council tax personally. (we rent and dont' own a house)
should i phone them and try to arrange a payment plan but would they add monthly charges?
or should i try the council again, i phoned months ago to try to reason with them and they were horrible to me hung up on me eventually. were completely rude 2me. help |

Contact your local council again and explain the situation. You might even try the citizens advice bureau the can help as well.
Nobody agrees with paying the council tax but unfortunately we have to. |

Errrm have you ever tried turning up in person at the council offices about this? Why did you never set up a direct debit with the council for your council tax? How come you can afford to pay an internet subscription in preference to paying your council tax? Should I go on or do you realise what a dumbass you've been yet? |

Have you tried going to your local Citizen's Advice Bureau. They can usually help/advise on these situtations.

I would contact the bailiffs. The problem once it has gone to the stage where bailiffs are coming round is that it is now out of the council's hands - the debt has basically been passed on to an external agency.
Business / organisations are reasonable and do understand that some peopel have financial difficulties but at the end of the day they don't want to lose the money that they are owed. You really should have persisted with the council and arranged a monthly payment with them - there is no reason why they wouldn't have agreed to it.
Good luck, I hope you sort it out, I know how stressful money worries can be.
You could also approach your local CAB and see what they advise.
As for not agreeing with council tax - its there to pay for your local services, police, fire, rubbish collections so it makes no difference at all whether you rent or own your home!!!! |

go to your council and speak with them in person
talking to them over the phone feels pointless because they normally don't write down all the info they should which will leave you in the learch.
they do provide people who are struggling some help.
if your bf is out of a job , he should have claimed benefits.. where he could have got help with paying part of the rent and with the council tax. if he applies for it now the council wont back date his claim to when he lost his job they will only start paying him for the day he applies.
and if all else fails go to your local CAB citizens advice bureau
i don't think you need an appointment but you need to go there early because its a 1st come 1st service thing where they only see a certain amount of people and send the rest home. |

DONT PANICK - !
I am in the same boat as you - in fact about 100 pounds difference -
1. - IGNORE the bailiff - its there job to get the whole amount -
2.DO phone your council - I have arranged to pay £ 200 a month - ( thats £110, were in a flat, )
and £ 90 off what we owe -
did this last week - GUESS WHAT no phone calls or letters from the bailif !!!
any more help or assistance

I think you need to take legal advice sharpish, start with the citizens advice bureau. BTW wether you rent or own your own property, you still use the same council services so I don't see why you should resent paying because you don't own your own home. Get financial advice going forward because with the tax credits & benefits people can claim these days, there is no reason you shouldn't have enough money to pay your bills. I have been poor, living from hand to mouth but I always paid my bills because I had a plan, you need to sort out a plan for your finances. Please don't take this as criticism, I am genuinely trying to be helpful. |

Hi Clare
Yeah, any council's behave like this. They are a law unto themselves. Call the Citizen's Advice Bureau now! The number is in the book and it's a free service, manned by solicitors.
They should at least put you on to someone who can help you ok? Don't delay, call them now!!

hello i've been in simialr situations with baliffs and in the past i have tried with success this; speak to them and explain your situation, and offer to pay them bit by bit. They haven't normaly charged a monthly interest charge, as long as you pay a little-as much as you can and often there isn't much they can do.
i know this isn't much of a good situation but i hope this little bit can help you. |
