Should i use H&R Block for my taxes?
Is H&R Block a good firm to do a persons taxes? I hear people say they are a ripoff because they just fill out an electronic form they are reading off a computer, and that i would be better off just using Turbo Tax if that was the case.

It depends. If your return is complex, like with stock sales, your own business, or you own rental property, then it's probably worth having someone prepare your taxes rather than doing it yourself. Note that this is not a recommentation for H&R doing it necessarily, just having a preparer do it rather than doing it yourself - unless you know a bit about tax prep, in which case you should be fine.

If your income is from a job or multiple jobs, and maybe some interest on a bank account, you'd probably be fine with Turbo Tax.

Why don't you do it yourself and then have a professional preparer look at it and see if they can do better? Some professional preparers will do this for free.

Blanket statements about preparation firms are not very helpful. You need a good preparer. Good preparers can be found at such firms, as well as elsewhere. Ask questions of your preparer before you get your taxes done to assure yourself that the preparer can do the job you need.

Visit http://www.irs.gov/individuals/index.html
and click 1040 central and then e-file logo.
If you are single and using the basic 1040 this is somethng you can do on your own and avoid paying H&R their fees.
There is no charge if you income is below 54,000 dollars.
I did this last year and it was quick and simple. Your refund will be electronically deposied into your account.
Hope this helps and just make sure all your entries are right and don't forget to print a hard copy for your records.

I use the online H&R tax prep software. It walks you through step by step and e-files for less than $40 for your basic form. It works great, and is comparable, say Turbo Tax.

Storefront tax return companies can be used if your return is simple (ie: wages, some interest, and maybe itemized deductions). If your tax circumstances are more complex (ie: self employed, capital gains) you are better off seeing a tax professional.

Unhappily, Block is known for non-tax ripoffs. Those include audit "assurance", investments, and other high-fee items for which they have lost class action lawsuits in the past. Be careful to stay away from those products. They don't mind losing the class action suits, as the "punishment" is that they usually give a discount to those they ripped off the previous year. They come out far ahead on those suits.

Find a reputable preparer if you have complex tax issues. I personally use an accountant from H&R block and have been using the same person for about 20 years. You can find good and bad preparers in every business whether it is a storefront firm or other. The storefront businesses make money on the extras that they sell with the preparation service.

If you think that you can prepare your taxes on your own by using Turbo Tax or other method I would just do it yourself. As a business owner my taxes are little more complex than the 1040. Another thing about H&R Block is that if you are ever audited the preparer will be there with you to go through the audit with you and the IRS auditor. I think in reality it may cost a little more money to have a tax preparer do your taxes but you have the piece of mind that you know it is done right and that you will have assistance if you ever need it in an audit.
