First off you can not claim a goat on your taxes,a child can be claimed.
Unless you adopt the child the mother is the parent and gets the claim.

It's not possible to say. Much more information is needed to answer your question.

Which of you is the natural parent of the child? If you are not the child's father and the child did not live in your home for the entire year, you cannot claim the child at all. Period.

If you are the child's father and the child did not live in your home for more than half of the year then you can only claim it if the mother gives you Form 8332 granting you the right to claim the exemption. In this case, you get the exemption and Child Tax Credit only. All other benefits (HoH filing status, EIC, Dependent Care Credit, etc.) go to the mother.

If you are both the child's natural parents and the child lived with both of you for more than half of the year, only then do you get to choose who can claim her. In that case, you would have to figure your tax returns both ways. But a few guidelines are in order even so. You probably can file as Head of Household since you have the higher income. She probably can NOT file as HoH unless she can prove that she paid more than half the cost of maintaining the household. Whoever claims the child also claims all other credits (CTC, EIC, etc.). Without knowing both of your incomes, it's not possible to say if you can claim the EIC or if it would be better for you to claim the child and do so.

Contrary to the absurd advice of others, you cannot file a joint return (there's no such filing status as "filing as a couple") since you are not married. Nor can you claim your g/f as your dependent unless she makes less than $3,500 for 2008.

Are you talking about a random kid?

This one could go either way - you'd have to calculate it both ways to see. Without knowing how much your income is, no way to tell.

If the child isn't your biological child, then there's no decision to make, you can't claim him or her. If the baby is your biological child together, then the choice is yours and your gf's.

You have a lot of wrong answers here, as usual for a question like this. Bostonian's is the only other correct answer. The only thing I'd add their is if the child was born in the second half of the year, the 6 months rule for the baby living with you doesn't apply

you actually dont have a choice. the law defines who can claim the dependent. its not left up to who will benefit most.

well it depends

1) if you and ur wife are divorced- whoever is keeping the child deserves the money

2) if its not one of your kids- if its ur gfs kid then she gets it or if its ur kid u get the kid

3) whoever makes less money- should deserve the money

4) whoever spends more money on the child buying food, toys and clothing for the kid should get the money

hope this hellps
please put as best answer

Im not a tax expert, but can't you claim her also. You will make the most claiming them both I would think. She doesn't have to file.

ummmm im pretty sure you because it should bring down your yearly earnings

grammy
fill out the papers for each of you and see who would get the biggest refund. Would it not be better to file as a couple with child as you are the parent. Unless you did not live together for 6 months out of the year.

The person making the smaller adjusted gross income should claim the child as a dependent. More child care money, more earned income credit, sn additional exemption. If it's you, you'll get all the credits and exemptions- and he will get NONE. Only one can claim the child as a dependent.

You would probably get the most money back on a tax return if you claimed your child because you make more money and you would also get the child earned income and most of what you paid in! But you could also consider claiming your girlfriend too. As a dependent if you all are living together! If you and your girlfriend filed together with your child you would get even more money I am sure! My fiance claimed me and our two children and he makes around 50,000 a year and our tax return this year was around 6,000 dollars! You can ask when you go to file your income tax which would be the best way and your tax preparer should be able to tell you!
