Should my parents file me as a dependent on their taxes?
I am 22, work part-time and go to school full-time. I do not live at home and am not supported by my parents. I make over $3,200.00. Do my parents still need to list me as a dependent since I am not 24?
Additional Details
To clarify:

I make OVER $3,200.00. The IRS web site said something about under 24 and over 3,200 as income.

Anyways, I made $23,000.00 (rounded) last year. My parents don't pay for my education at all; they're not on any loans or anything. Everything is me. I've taken out federal loans to pay.

Unless they lie on their tax return, they can't claim you as their dependent. One of the tests for dependent is that the dependent can NOT pay for over 50% of his/her own support. Given that you have paying your own support, then you are not their dependent.

You will have to file your own return. After Feb 3, IRS will be ready to accept returns with Education Credits. You will get some money back.

Best wishes.

Your parents should not claim you as a dependent on their tax return. They do not need to list you, you do not qualify as their dependent.

To avoid problems, file soon and claim yourself. Take any available education credits or deductions for yourself as well.

No, if you provide over half of your own support, then your parents can't claim you, even though you are under 24 and a full-time student so you meet the age test. It sounds from what you say that you are providing basically ALL of your own support.

You also would have to live with them at least half of the year for them to claim you.

You have to meet ALL of the tests in order to be claimed as a dependent. Doesn't sound like you do.

bostonianinmo
No, your parents CANNOT claim you as a dependent any more. The support test is not met.

Who pays for your school? If it is your parents, yes they need to claim you as a dependent on their taxes.

They can if they want to. Do they pay for your schooling? If you're only making 3200, there's no way you can be supporting yourself!

smith j
For somebody to claim you as a dependent you actually have to make under $3,300. This amount is the exemption amount for the 2006 tax year. You can however file and claim yourself (not as a dependent though). I went to www.expresstaxrefund.com and filed my taxes there (similar to your income as well).
