Andy G | Should my wife and I file separately or jointly for 2008? |
I made approximately 200K. She made approximatley 10K. We have two dependents. I am self-employed. She is a pre-school teacher. |

The chance that anything other than joint will be the better option is beyond remote. |

Run the numbers both ways. |

With these numbers, you definitely will be better off filing married filing joint. Someone might try to tell you that she could get earned income credit if she files alone with one or both of the kids, but the earned income credit isn't available to people who file married filing separate. |

u should never file seperatley because u lose all benefits for credits such as eic(earned income credit) and many others. make sure have all papers together for itemizing. for this amount of income you definetly might need to itemize. especially if your itemized totalling over 10,900. that is because you get a standard deduction of 10,900 for married filing jointly. hope helpful |

You did not state if it was gross or net on the 200K? If there are no past problems to come forward and bite you on the posteriou then married, filing joint would be best. |

Probably Married Filing Jointly is the best option, unless she had extraordinary medical bills. If you are paying day care costs in order for her to work, you might want to reconsider that decision. At your combined income rate, her $10,000 is taxed at an extraordinarily high rate, and you might not be able to deduct the day care costs. You may find that as a family, you have more takehome money if she stays home and cares for the children herself.
Run the numbers both ways - both what the taxes would be with just your income, and what they were with hers, and you will be able to figure out what her true "take home pay" is.
The only other reason you might want to consider filing separately is if one of you has had some bad dealings with the IRS in the past - such as undeclared income, tax fraud, garnishments, back taxes, defaulted student loan. If she owes back taxes or a defaulted student loan, filing jointly will give the IRS the ability to withhold both of your refund to satisfy the past problem. |

it all depends on how many itemized deductions you have.. i'd do them both ways and see which is more benefical? |

You can file as married filing jointly (MFJ) or married filing separately. In most cases, it is better to file as MFJ. Read http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/02/filing-status-for-married.html |

jointly, you will get more money! now if she owes, you should file head of house hold! never file married but filing separately! |
