Should our tax system pay for the welfare system ?
Whats Your Opinion ?

I really don't mind helping out those who are less fortunate than myself. I do get annoyed with the benefits system in the UK. I personally know quite a few folk who are cheating the system. It's up to the government to carry out more checks to ensure that the lazy spongers are kicked off and only the realy needy people, are catered for. This has been an issue with many taxpayers for a long time...

Tim
Welfare system is needed in cases where people are really down on their luck. But while on the welfare program they need to be taught to gain skills to get off welfare.

Too many people are happy to stay on welfare and get money each month for doing nothing.

I believe that those on welfare should be made to do community service as a part of getting their welfare checks. It is a way of giving back to the community that is giving them a helping hand. The schools are empty on the weekends. Staff could be provided to watch their kids will the people go out for the day picking up trash, pulling weeds and other tasks that are needed to keep the community looking good.

Of course we should. But there should be limits to it so people eventually have to get off of it and get to work if they are able to. It should not be a career. Unfortunately we have made it a career possibility for almost two full generations now. It keeps them alive but denies them any hope of the self-esteem and pride that everybody else gets who supports themselves most or all of the time.

yes we are a civilised nation, and not everyone is a sponger. anyone unhappy with the system is free to live elsewhere.

edit- new predictions state the country going into a depression by 2010 and unemployment trebling, we all need to be carefull of losing our jobs. will we be spongers then.

Smiley
In the USA, it already does. I'm not sure why I should pay for those who are able to take care of themselves.

A helping hand is ok..but continued support is not what welfare is for

You have another way? If you do, you'd be a global hero; your statue would be in every town square on the planet -- probably made of solid gold at that.

No, not if you put your faith in private insurance schemes only for the better-off like in the USA, otherwise if you believe in the UK model of the welfare state you pay in and if you become ill or redundant regardless of your circumstances you can claim a safety net payment to keep yourself and your family out of poverty till you are able to work again.
Private insurance is too market-led to be able to look after everyone so my basic answer to your question is finally 'yes'.

wartz
It is the only option.
