Should the gov scrap road tax(UK) and put up petrol to stop road tax dodgers.?
that way you cover the tax revenue.,you cannot avoid paying it.

i think, sorry know that this would be a very bad idea, yes it would hit the people who dont pay tax but it would have a far more dramatic effect on the people who do, for instance lorry drivers and and couriers would be forced off the road because mst are just about keeping the heads above the water - sending stuff through mail would go through the roof, the price of food would rise as well, and if your still getting the same wage every week then you would feel it to, thats why there was protestors when the fuel went up the last time and people are still sore about this point

whilst i kinda agree that we should do something to stop tax dodgers, i dont think this is the answer, my reason for this is that the cost to everyday people would be enormous and why should us law abiding people have to pay for the ones who dont?

we pay enough in this country to genuine scroungers, immigrants, convicts etc.... and slowly but surely people are starting to of had enough of it.

If you idea was put into place, there would be uproar.

for some reason, the government seem to think that by taxing people it will make things better...extra money is not the solution. I mean who the hell thought of a tax on emmisions? what balls....what does the extra money they gain achieve? not a lot really if you think about. people will still buy the 4x4 for various reasons like a large family, work, practicality etc...

if they want to stop road tax dodgers, then make it cheaper. that way more people will be willing to pay for it and they may find that the extra people paying for it will make up the shortfall in price. on the other hand, they should make the fines bigger for dodgers to act as a deterrant and randomly check cars that are declared SORN.

people only dodge tax because there is little chance they will get caught. make that chance bigger then they will pay up.

you could even tie in road tax to insurance. its far too easy to get an insurance cert these days. maybe insurance could be purchased with a valid copy from the post office of the tax disc or something, or even present the tax disc or an electronic card with car tax details on at a petrol station or they cant buy petrol.

That's a brilliant idea - maybe car insurance could be displayed the way road tax is - would that then cover the dodgers that people who comply with legislation are paying for?

We should wirte to our MPs about this - I am well impressed.

I've been saying this for years. That way, the more you drive, the more you pay.

DimBlonde
No, you never give in the cheats and crooks. They should use a bit more brain power to eliminate dodging. It's not that difficult

Sounds a reasonable idea, and one which has been considered. It is usually scuppered because you need an MOT for a car over 3 years old, and need the MOT to get the tax, as well as an insurance cert. The tax therefore proves, if only for a day, that the car was roadworthy and insured. Even tax exempt vehicles, such as cars over 30 years old, need the tax disc and therefore can prove they are roadworthy.

This is an old story , they were on about this over twenty years ago , I whould say myself YES , they should do this

The only people that seem to not want it , are those who have large cars

It is allso a very fair way of pricing , as it is like pay as you drive
