Leo Lion | Should the rich pay more income taxes? |
As I type, this question is being asked of Democratic Presidential Candidates. They seem to have glossed over the FACT that Corporate America pays about half of what Individuals pay, using phoney offshore tax loopholes to create higher profits, eliminating American jobs as well.
Should the "rich" pay more, or should Corporate America face up to their obligations? Additional Details "Yay'll" never get it. Try working for peanuts, or put a sign on yourself that reads..."Will Work for Food". |

Shouldn't the poor pay more? The rich pay 98.5% of all taxes. The upper 50% pay 100% of the federal tax burden while the lower 50% pay nothing (yet vote for tax increases and increased services that someone else pays for).
.....and you want the rich to pay even more??? |

If you are talking about corporations, first of all you aren't correct in what you say, and secondly corporations aren't "the rich" anyway. If you have a 401K or mutual fund or pension fund, you are probably a partial owner of some of these "rich" corporations |

Really hard to say. What's keeping the rich of getting richer? Taxes. What's keeping the poor from getting ahead? Taxes. If it wasn't for high taxes, working classes would be able to save enough from their investments to retire young. Should Corporate America face higher taxes? Let's think about the working class for a sec. With higher taxes on Corporate America, do you think those over-paid CEOs will really earn less? It'll only cause global economic slowdown, and the working class will be laid off due to higher corporate taxes. Who will end up paying for higher corporate tax? The lower and middle class. |

The country needs a simple flat tax. Everyone pays the same percentage with no ways to hide.
Or perhaps a national sales tax. The rich have more money & spend more money so they would pay more taxes. If you take good care of your money & save it, you pay no taxes. The only taxes would be when you buy something.
Just think of all the money the government would save since there would be no need for the IRS & the thousands of IRS agents. And the number of accountants & tax services would disappear.
We can dream, can't we or is that taxed already? |

Are you talking about as a percentage of their income or in absolute terms? Right now, the "rich" pay more when calculated in both ways. The question you should be asking is at what point does the "rich" pay more than their fair share. Using the argument that the "rich" should pay more because they can afford to becomes the slippery slope that allows Congress and their backers to continually tax the "rich" for all of their pet projects. When do you stop?
As for the "rich," you don't have to earn a lot of money to fall into that category. |

yes, why should some poor farmer pay the same amount (along with the stuff the government takes anyway with the crappy milk fee thingys) as someone who has enough money that they dont have to worry about where the money to pay the thing is going to come from???? |

Certainly, the rich should pay more income taxes than the poor. The rich have more disposable income, and so it is reasonable to expect more from them. |

I have no clue what all that jumbo is about up there, but, they worked hard to earn their money, why should they pay more of it to the government, when people sit around having babies, just to get a monthly check, when they don't work?
Is that what you mean? |

I make 10 dollars an hour, work 50 hours a week, and am barely making ends meet. I get no assistance from the government, and 1/4 of my check goes to pay for other people's benifits. My father, who makes close to 200,000 a year, pay less yearly than i do.
They should put a limit on the number of children you have while receiving benifits. They should limit how many people in the same family get them. but dont group everyone in the lower income brackets as welfare pumping hoodrats.
In 2004, 4 million people did not file taxes. Last year It neared 6 million. I think if everyone living under the poverty line refused it would be difficult to convict anyone.
Interesting story about family refusing to pay federal taxes: |
