No, I think paying taxes is a part of a civilised society. But if the money ends up not where the society wants it, then there should be protests. People should also refuse to pay if they are over-taxed.

and who is going to pay for Police, public schools, local authorities, refuse collection, parks...?

if you refuse to pay it and suggest a better system, feel free to offer it. the Council tax contibute only about 25% of the Government revenue.

Do you prefer to pay a fee every time your kids go to school, or you throw a rubbish bag, or you call the Police or 999?...

There are certain services that we all depend on and the council tax provides the payment for them, you can't always see it, but if you want the information they are happy to provide it.

I am not happy to pay council tax either, but unless there is a better way of organising to pay local authorities, I would rather pay it.

Take away tax's. Take away Ambulances, hospitals, have your bustbins overflowing. Sewerage in the streets. Illnesses that have not been heard of for years back. No schools so, kids running riot. Basic Mayhem in the country. No not a good idea.

oldfart
I think Spiritual Darren is looking in the wrong book.

Well if there is no council tax then how else do you propose the have things like street cleaning, bin collection, local schools maintained, road and street repairs, policing etc. paid for?

Taxes are part of our life and we unfortunately have to pay them. Saying that though, I think that it should be means tested and those with more money should pay more than those with less. I know that it is meant to happen with the house banding but those with more are only paying in reality a smaller percentage of their disposable income.

stevabeth
We do need to pay taxes as they do have huge benefits. If we didnt pay them then everyting would be privatised and then we would have to pay a hell of a lot more for everything.
I do however think the current cost is expensive and the system is unfair.

No of course not. The only people who would agree with that kind of idea are those who do not understand the link between taxation and services. The less you pay, the worse your country is run- it's as simple as that. If we stopped paying council tax, who would pick up the rubbish? Who would plan the roads and buses? If you don't want the benefits of living in a widely taxed society, then I suggest you move somewhere with no NHS and no free education.

Oh, and stop sponging off our ridiculously extensive welfare system. I assume you are, because only someone with no concept of societal responsibility would ask such a question.

I'm not sure if it has been resolved but i know that 2 years ago under British law you were allowed to refuse to pay tax. Of course the public were never made aware but under international law the war created a loop hole due certain crimes committed by the British armed forces that meant you could refuse to pay taxes to a government committing such crimes. I'm more than sure that the !EVIL! (words cant express the hatred i have for all members of all parts of the whole British government) scum (getting closer but scum are more like angels compared to governmental figures) have waved there pitchforks and fiddled the law so this no longer applies. However you have to ask why should i pay tax to a government system i more than strongly disagree with. Ask your self when els would you ever pay such a large sum without knowing what it is being spent on. Their are so many laws created to ensure they get your !EARNED! money, however there are none that ensure you know why your paying and what its being spent on. BY DEFINITION TAX CREATES SLAVES OUT OF EMPLOYEES - are you truly free? ....find out look up: -------zeitgeist addendum-------

council taxes are NOT going up year on year to provide services like some misguided people have posted. Rather it keeps going up to keep pace with the increasing pensions and salaries of employees of the local authorities all of which is paid by the hard earned taxes of private sector workers who in the majority of cases cannot even afford pensions of their own!
