claddaghmamma | Should there be a tax on any vehicle getting less than 20 mpg? |
If we can't ban them completely.
I don't know how I feel on the subject, but it is worth discussing. I happen to be fairly conservative on most things, but something has to be done. |

The person with the car that gets that gas mileage is already paying extra tax each time they purchase gas.
There are two reasons someone drives a big car with bad gas mileage, either (1) they have to (big family, can't afford a new car, need the truck for work) or (2) they want to (they have a lot of money and the most important thing to them is to have an H2).
An extra tax on these vehicles wouldn't really help anyone. It would hurt those who need the car. (and they probably can't afford it) And those that have this vehicle for show are still going to drive it even if there is an extra tax. You will just be making it more exclusive for them.
So I don't think that a tax (or a ban) is a good idea. Not until there is an AFFORDABLE alternative for those that need it. |

There are already 2 taxes in place. First, is those folks pay more taxes on fuel because they purchase more fuel.
Second is the gas guzzler tax. This tax is paid when a vehicle is purchased. The lower the fuel economy of the vehicle, the higher the gas guzzler tax paid.
Following link shows amount of tax that is paid based on fuel economy of the vehicle being purchased:

Here's a list of the vehicles subject to the tax in 2008:

It would really be nice if all of our vehicles did get that kind of gas mileage - however in reality they do not. There are some of us who need the larger vehicles for hauling or towing purposes (and no it's not to tow our fancy boats and ATV's - gosh don't I wish). It should be up to the automakers to produce those types of vehicles with the same kind of capacities for consumers. Why should the consumers be taxed yet again? |

There already IS a Gas Guzzler Tax! It's been in place for decades. It's based upon the Corporate Average Fuel Economy of each manufacturer. Most of the larger manufacturers only run produce a couple of models that it applies to, but manufacturers of cars such as Rolls Royce, Bentley, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, etc. have them levied on virtually their entire model line.
That's on top of the total cost of operation and the higher total fuel cost and fuel tax that they already pay.
The only way to cut fuel prices is to cut demand. The only way to cut demand is to be more efficient at a personal level. Some signs are already in place -- the sales of large gas-guzzling SUVs has tanked and the demand for fuel-sippers is skyrocketing. Old Geo Metros with their tiny 3-cylinder 1.0 liter engines and 40+ highway MPG are demanding a premium price on eBay for serviceable models. Toyota can't crank out enough Priuses and Honda is set to re-introduce new hybrid models in a couple of months.
In the end, however, not a lot will change at a meaningful level until Americans give up on the idea that it is their God-given right to be wasteful. The environmentalists -- the so-called "tree huggers" -- have warned of this for ages; Americans are finally sitting up and taking notice. |

That is a very good question. Part of me says: "No, these people are already paying far too much for gas as it is", the other part is upset that people still buy these cars. As of last year, fuel efficiency ranked in the early twenties in rank of importance among Americans. That is extremely disturbing. My suggestion is something different: assistance for people with gas hogs to let them trade their vehicles in for more fuel efficient models without taking too much of a hit on their vehicles current poor trade in value. Then we take those vehicles, and instead of reselling them, we recycle them in the production of more fuel efficient vehicles that can, based on their recycled status, be sold even more cheaply to the people who need a more fuel efficient vehicle. It would create more jobs, too. Just my opinion. We would need more cooperation with our auto industry, but I think it could be done. |

If you want to buy me a new car. you are right though, something needs to be done. |

But Maybe on new ones only. The Hummer is a gas hog, and it gets tax advantages, because it is a "truck"!
We should also think of a tax credit for new cars that can reach over 40 MPG. |
