Should there be just one tax band of 10%?
any thoughts on this?

And I mean, EVERYONE pays, no exceptions, no loopholes, no get out clauses... everyone in the country pays one low rate of 10%

Consider it for a moment, this means that someone earning £100K would pay 5 times as much as someone who earns £20K ...

therefore the tax burden on all would be the same percentage of what they make....

Don't need to go so far as Hong Kong to see an example of this working. Estonia and Russia have this in place and I think the Czech Republic has too.

In principle instead of reporting benefits/expenses, wages a company will merely need to state its entire wages paid out and pay the 10%. Practically no paperwork, no NIC, no expenses/tax relief and no special cases.

However as your answers above prove you will always have someone who thinks the rich should be on a higher tax band and special cases like nurses should be given more tax relief.

Once a single change has been made then its back to the old way as a company can't merely state its entire wages. The whole benefit of that system will be lost.

With MP's constantly trying to get public favour the tax sytem will always be tampered with until it gets too complicated then they try to simplfy things again.

How would things like the Health Service be financed? Or the Police? That kind of level of taxation coulnd't possibly fund all the things that you expect to be free.

if it would reduce the burden on the middle class, then I'd be all for it.. I'm not sure it would work though..

Quixotic
I would love it.

It would save a lot of money in tax prep and tax avoidance.

I've heard Hong Kong has a flat 10% income tax.

Yes there should. Quite a few money experts have been saying this for years. They reckon it will be fairer for everyone. And there are countries out there that operate the 10% rate - I don't know which but I'm sure we could find out on the net. It would work out better because we wouldn't need so many Inland Revenue workers, etc. and the Government would save a fortune.

mike-from-spain
would certainly make the tax mans job a lot simpler, and mean less of them, so a good idea, also less for lawyers and accountants to do to try to get the rich out of paying tax.

I totally agree. I live in the US and have hoped for a flat tax, everyone pays, no loopholes. Here in the US, the rich pay little if any taxes because they have sooooo many loopholes their accountants can use. The poor, pay no tax. So, the middle class get stuck with supporting the country. You are correct, everyone pays same rate is only fair.

Well... I live in Bermuda and I pay a 4.75% payroll tax, and that's it for income taxes.

Everything is significantly more expensive here, but I'd much rather be taxed on what I spend, rather than what I earn.

Perhaps UK could learn from its overseas territories.

gordonmother
I agree on principle, but I still believe that people who earn more than £100,000 should pay 40% and not 10% in order that less fortunate working men and women can afford to survive considering the cost of living.
