Should unmarried single parents be allowed to claim their kids on their taxes ?
I'm referring to people who have never married yet they keep having kids ! Seems unfair to me that a single responsible person hardly has any deductions yet parents who have never been married are allowed to get huge tax deductions for their illegitimate kids !

If I'm understanding the question, you're basically saying that people who have kids out of wedlock should not be allowed to claim them as tax deductions.

In a sense I agree in that people who have multiple kids without ever marrying the mother or father of their kids should not be allowed to claim them as tax deductions.

Most married caring couples have kids when they can financially provide an adequate way of life and as such I agree that those people have every right to claim their kids but those people who have kids by different people and never marry or for that matter properly care for their children should not be allowed to claim them as tax deductions.

It's almost like welfare in that a single mother knowing that having more kids can increase her free benefits will likely opt to add more kids in return for added benefits whether it's money, food stamps, housing, pre-school programs, free lunch programs etc etc !

People who have more than one child who have never married know the more kids they have the bigger their tax refund will be !

Sad situation but it happens everyday !

Of course they can! There's nothing in the Tax Code that says that they can't -- and never has been to my knowledge.

What "huge tax deductions" are you referring to? (Aside from the fact that there are no "deductions" for having children unless you're paying heavy medical bills -- parents get an EXEMPTION for each child.)

FYI, the relative pittance that parents get for claiming exemptions for their children barely pays the diaper bills. When you add up the remaining costs for food, clothing, medical care, etc. they're thousands of dollars POORER then their childless counterparts.

It's not about morals or fairness really. It is a concept called wherewithal to pay. As a single individual you have relatively fewer expenses and therefore more money(wherewithal) to pay taxes so you should pay more than someone who has children. I don't really see any unfairness in this as you make it out to be. The real unfairness is in the abuse of the well-fair and social security program thats the real injustice.

OK, first of all, the deductions are hardly "huge", and second of all, the single parent typically makes less money and yet has to provide for not just themselves, but for their child as well. So yeah, on the one hand, you might consider their tax benefits as a "break", but on the other hand, it's about the only break they get financially.

The whole purpose of the EIC and HOH filing status is to make it financially feasible for single-income, single-parent families to have a working wage-earner. If it weren't for these tax benefits, more single parents would be thinking of quitting their jobs because it would be more financially rewarding for them to collect welfare than it would be to go out and work!

Ben
The fact that they had kids before they were married does not affect that fact that they have to take care of the kids. That's why they get the deductions because of the money spent on food, clothing, ect.....

Sounds like someone has been eating a lot of sour grapes!
I had no idea, being a single mom was irresponsible!
I have a decent job and my son is very well loved and taken care of. So if the government wishes to throw a few extra bucks my way, damn straight I'm gonna take it.
And if the shoe was on the other foot, so would you.
We all make choices in life, some good, some bad. And the choices I make are the ones that I have to live with it, not you.
There are too many more important things to worry about than how big the refund is of an unwed mother of 4.

Bette
If they provide for the care of the children, then yes, they should claim them as dependents. However, if they are not married they cannot claim married - so only one of them gets to claim the children as dependents. We need to get rid of the IRS - Fairtax.org is the only salvation for the taxpayers in the US.

yes they should, because they get an extra deduction for each child and it helps them take care or their children

Sheila
Hey such is life. Didn't your Momma ever tell you life's not fair? If I were single or even married with no children I might agree, but since I have four kids, and by the way am married, I don't agree with you, they get me a decent refund.

D J
Perhaps you should stop worrying about other people and worry about your own business.
What other people do, is not of your business.

If you don't like the tax laws, perhaps you should contact your Representative about getting the FairTax passed.

kimberly
so all single people should abstain from sex? this question is about wayy more than taxes.

I can understand how you feel the way you do, but that's not how the laws are written.

i have two children and was never married to their biological father, however he feels i should have to route years on claiming my kids on taxes since he pays child support. There is no court order stating that I have to and he does not have my kids even 3 months out of the year. Should i have to route years by law? i can not find anything stating that I have to
