celebrate | Should we save our W2 forms if we get a notice from Social Security showing our earnings? |
i read something that said save w2s because they will show what your earnings & benefits will be but I get something in the mail that shows this so I don't think I need the w2s..what other benefits would the w2s show that I might need them for? |

If your W-2 and the social security statement basically agree, you don't need these pieces of paper to clutter your life.
Save your tax returns, that is enough. Unless you have complicated tax issues, three years is probably enough. |

For your tax return, you need the W-2. Therefore, you should keep a copy of the W-2 for at least 3 years after you file. 5 would be better.
You cannot use your social security statements in place on a W-2 for tax puposes. |

The summary for Social Security is interesting but it doesn't mean squat. You must keep your W-2 for at least seven years because they have all the other information as to what you earned, what was deducted, contributions to 401K's etc. that you need for filling in your taxes and if you get audited in the future. |

You should ALWAYS save your W-2 forms with your income tax returns. |

You should keep your W-2s with copies of your tax returns for at least three years or as long as your state tax returns can be audited. (That is four in my state, California.)
Aside from tax returns, the first copy of Form W-2 is the input document for crediting your Social Security account and is sent there by your employer. If your employer fails to file that copy, you won't get credit for the wages and your retirement benefits will be reduced. You should compare the wages on your W-2s to make sure everything has been reported and notify Social Security if there is a mismatch. |

I think that you should keep your W-2 for at least 3 years and preferably 7 , in case of possible audits and revise with Social Security to see if the accurately listed all the jobs you had. If they didn't you have to correct it, because eventually your SS check, when you retire would be lower than what you are entitled to.PS if an accountant helped you they might have copies of missing W 2 forms. |

If in doubt keep everything. Get a box and keep it all together as you never know when you may need to provide proof of something ( I had this situation earlier this year and having the right bits of paper actually saved me a couple of thousand) |

Your W2 is the form your employer provides you to demonstrate your earnings and withholdings over the most recent fiscal year.
Your social security notice provides your estimated social security revenue at your eligible date to receive it.
You should always save your W2s, I think the recommended time period is 7 years. They don't have much to do with social security - your payout is supposed to be based upon your age and expected date of retirement, rather than how much you've put into the system.
I personally discount the social security forms entirely. As a 30-something, I expect social security to be nonexistent by the time I retire. |
