Average annual cost to the NHS on smoking related diseases in the UK is £1.7 billion
Average annual government income from tax on tobacco in the UK is £10.5 billion.
The high tax apparently has 2 purposes, to encourage lower usage and to keep taxes lower for those who can't afford it.....Isn't this self defeating, if the government achieve objective 1, objective 2 falls on it's face!

Ive been saying the same for years mate.
Its a case of biting the hand that feed you.
There basically saying, "give me all your money when you buy fags, cos we cant really pay for a lot of stuff unless we charge you extortionate rates on ciggys", then on the other hand there saying "STOP SMOKING NOW!!!!". |

If that is the breakdown for smoking I would like to know the figures for alcohol related issues yet this is seen as socially acceptable. I appreciate that smoking affects others but lookng at the statistics for physical and mental abuse, Criminal damage, Health related issues etc etc isnt this far worse as most of the damage through smoking is to the individual..So before everyone screams at me yes I do understand that individuals need to take responsibility but isnt it all about money as far as the government is concerned could it be something to do with the availability of cigarettes on the black market now! |
