Something seems wrong - my boyfriend owes $5K? (CA)?
Something seems very wrong. Maybe we did the math wrong...

There is no WAY he would owe $5K to the state of CA. He made only $16K from his AK and CA wages.. there's just no WAY, right? We're thinking that something was entered wrong and we're having his step mom double check but... please someone tell me this is not possible. Niether of us even have 5K.

Though on the W2 forms in the State Income box... the numbers were kinda low. Like $6 and $120... I don't know if that has anything to do with it...

Thank you very much for giving me your opinions so far.

you are correct there must be a a mistake. Even if he was paid on a 1099 (no taxes taken out) he would not owe 5k on 16K income

This happens so often. You're doing it at the last minute, you enter a wrong amount, you see the resul;ts , and you panic.
CALM DOWN!!!
Now, CHECK YOUR MATH!!!!

He needs to review his tax return and if he can't figure out his error, take it to a tax pro who charges by income level. He should also call the California State Francise Tax Board. They will correct any errors over the phone. He would probably have to file an amended return. See:

He owes. CA tax is very expensive if you don't have it deducted.

I think you have to go back over it. That doesn't sounds right at all.

If it seems that wrong, I would go to a tax professional and have them double check it.

it sounds like they might not have taken the right amount out of his paycheck, call the state tax board and ask if it's correct.

ca has really high taxes so i wouldn't doubt it. my parents have 48% of their monthy wages taken for taxes!

He may have not filled out his W2's the correct way. Look at his past pay check stubs and see how much was taken out in taxes. He may have declared 0 on his W2's. Which would cause for little or no taxes to have been taken out of his checks. So he would owe money.
