Emergency tax code is 522L, with either a W1, M1 or X after it. To be able to answer more specifically, I need to know more. Can you edit?
1) What code number is employer using?
2) Did employer ask your son to sign a form P46 to say it is his only/main/first job?
3) What was the date son started job?
4) Is the job regular work, or just in student vacation time?
I assume your son is a student in full-time education, and works part-time.
Your son is allowed to earn £5225 per annum in this tax year, which goes from 6th April - 5th April. If you are unable to edit, I can only suggest contacting tax office, staff will tell you what information is needed. Employer can tell you address and reference, son will have to quote National Insurance number. |

he doesn't need to claim this back, he will get it back auto-matically in a rebate, also as its his first job he will have a period when he will not pay tax at all for a while, this will sort out soon. |

if you live in UK then we pay emergency tax which it taxed on every penny untill they sort out our tax code then all the money will be returned less what is due..this will take a few weeks or months then the lad will be cockerhoop at his tax rebate |

if this is his first job since leaving school, he should sign a form P46 which his employer will give him. Once this is signed, the employer puts him on 522L cumulative and refunds the tax. If this is beyond the emplyer to deal with, ring HMRC and ask them to intervene.
On no account leave it until the end of the tax year or your son will be in a queue with 100's of others wanting refunds. |

Check his tax code which should be on his wage slip. It should be 522L. If its BR (I think) hes on emergency tax. He (or most likely you) should contact the tax office so they can put his tax code right. He will get any rebate usually on a weekly/monthly basis up to the end of the year and if its not straight by then hell get the rest in a rebate. |
