Gimme Answers | State Return - I live in Texas - I know I don't *have to* file a State Return since I live in TX but one of |
my W-2's state that $6675 was witheld - #16 - State wages, tips, etc. Is this a problem? Should I file a State return? Can I file a State Return? Would it help the fact that I owe money for some reason that I am unaware of?
Thanks! ^_^ |

No, you don't have state income tax in Texas there is no form to file and they won't have withheld any money for state taxes. |

TX does not have a state income tax.
The particular state that the taxes were withheld for should be listed on the W-2. That's the state that you need to be concerned about. |

If there is a number in Box 16 that just means that whoever filled in your W-2 didn't know what they were doing. Nothing to worry about, no need to file anything. If, however, they actually withheld something, and there is a number in Box 17, then you have a problem. |

Are you sure this is withholding or is it truly state wages. The W-2 will sometimes list state wages. See if the box next to it "state tax withheld" has an amount. |

TX does not have an income tax. Your employer can't withhold state tax in TX -- and you couldn't file a State income tax return if you wanted to. You must be mis-reading your W-2. Block 16 is State wages, not an amount withheld. Block 17 should be blank or $0. |

Seriously, what was your total income. If state "taxable wages" was $6675 that would just imply that, if they did take taxes, they would base your tax rate on that amount of income. For a state to actually withhold $6675 you would have to be making a good sum of money, most state tax rates are around 7% roughly (in CA almost 10%), but even at 10% you would need to be making almost 70000 a year to pay that much in taxes. Im not saying you dont make that much, im just sayin......common sense dictates that Texas doesnt take state income tax, and even if you lived in a state that did...im guessing you made 7k last year and therefore wouldnt have to pay anyways |

you do not have to |

Maybe the state that witheld the taxes is not Texas. In that case, yes, you would have to file a state tax return. |

Tx does not have state income tax and you don't have to file state tax return. The w-2 #16 is reporting the wages you earned in TX and it not the state taxes. Check your W-2 #17 the state taxes withheld, it should be blank. If not your W2 is wrong and is only a techical mistake. Contact the employer and get a corrected W-2. |

Box 16 is wages earned in the state of Texas.
Box 17 is the amount of state taxes withheld from your paycheck. Box 17 should be blank - as I understand Texus does not have an income tax... |
