Suddenly, they aren't taking out Federal Taxes?
I work at a job where I was making about 1,000 every two weeks. On my W-4, I believe filed as 0, instead of 1, because I didn't get my new W-4 in on time so it automatically filed as 0. Anyway, recently I have been making significantly less money, because I have been in school. My question is this: on my last paycheck, which was only 290, they did not take out any federal taxes. This is the first time in a year they haven't taken out ANY taxes. My wages, before taxes, are 12,411.58. And so far, I''ve had 1,023 dollars taken out in federal taxes alone. I'm pretty confused. Why have they stopped taking out federal taxes? Am I going to end up owing a lot of money come next year? Should I bring this up to my boss? Please help!

there are minimums at every payroll level, ie weekly, monthly etc at which no income taxes are withheld because the gross is so low
this very well could be your case at $290

Each paycheck is calculated separately based on the amount of THAT paycheck only.

You could end up owing - can't say without knowing what you expect to make for the year. You can ask for extra to be taken out - there's a line on the W-4 for that.

Gee, biweekley, gross of $290.
For single/0, no withholding until wages of $240 or more. ($6 for $290 to $300).
For single/1, no withholding until wages of $380 or more.
For single/2, no withholding until wages of $520 or more.

As for owing, take your paystub and use the withholding calculator at irs.gov. If you need to, you can plug in $X per pay period on a new W-4 and turn it in.
