TLT | TAX QUESTION FOR A TAX PERSON! (I live in Texas)? |
Can I have more that one person or company figure my taxes before I decide who I want to go with to file them? I want to choose the one that will cost the least or free. My husband and I made only a little over $6,000 in '07 and we have 2 children. I know irs.gov has a free file but I don't want to use it if someone else is able to increase my refund. I already had one person figure and they came up with a refund of over $2,600. Is there a website that can give and refund estimate for free? |

Try using Turbotax or Taxact free basic edition online first.. compare the two.. and then file for free. If you hire a person do figure your tax, you will have to pay the preparer's fees regardless if you decide to file using their figures or not. Best Wishes. |

Tonya...if the first guy did the job correctly (based on what information you gave), then there is no way to increase you refund....your tax is your tax.
as far as reporting in more creative ways, well...yes, you will find some tax guy who can put all sorts of funny stuff on your return, but he is not responsible for it...YOU ARE. and that is where you can get BUSTED. |

There's no magic way to increase a refund when it's only coming from withholding and EIC. Every legitimate preparer is going to come up with the same amount. |

Hi there. I work for a CPA. Here's what I know:
If you go to someone and have them figure your taxes, they're going to charge you for the time they spend working on it, whether they file it or not. By the time you go to a couple people, the cost will eat up most of your refund. I use TaxAct, it's free and you can either download the software or use their online system. You can plug your numbers in and see if it gets you a better refund, without having to pay the big bucks for a pro. (The guy I work for charges $175 an hour, just to give you an idea) I've used TaxAct for the last 4 years, and I love it. |

For around $40.00 you can buy Turbo Tax and figure it yourself and use the find deduction program and it will walk you through everything on both your State and Federal then if you decide you can e- file it right from your computer it is fast and accurate. |

Yes, go to turbotax.com and go through all the steps and it can calculate the amount before you have to pay. You do not have to return to them to complete your taxes. |

Go to hrblock.com this is where I've been filing my taxes for the past 6 years. It will tell you how much you're getting before you actually file the return and deduct it from your return. |

Your refund will not change from preparer to preparer. Your fee may. What will happen if you DON'T file with a particular person is that your file will be put on HOLD until you pay for it. If you never pay, it will eventually be voided out of their system.
As a professional preparer, I've had to void many returns because the client didn't want to pay the associated fees. It really IS a lot of money, but we're also the people who have the answers. |
