Talking of taxes, do people who get free council houses and social security benefits have to pay community tax
Or is it just the ones who have worked hard to pay for their own houses, I am asking this as I live abroad and would like to know.

Gar
Yes. I believe they pay a slightly reduced rate, if I'm not mistaken.

ChocLover
Do you mean council tax? Yes, they are supposed to pay but if they get benefits for rent then they get benefit for council tax too so in effect, no they don't pay it.
I live in a council house and I get no benefits, I work hard to pay my rent and council tax as I cannot afford a mortgage.

taxed till i die,
If you are on benefits then no.

If you mean Council Tax, yes people who live in Council houses pay this the same as anyone else. Those in receipt of other means tested benefits (such as JSA or Income Support) and those on a low income will pay at a reduced rate, and some will have the whole of their Council Tax bill covered by their benefit entitlement, depending on the amount of their income and savings.

MICHAEL P
People who get 'free' council houses and live on benefits alone generally are up to 100% exempt from paying council tax. Even those that pay for their own houses can get levels of council tax benefit up to 100% if they are full benefits or low wages. However much we hate it, there will always be people who for some reason or another ( often by choice ) will always opt to have an easy life, claim their 'rightful' benefits and do sod all. Some may call that scrounging. Benefits should be targeted but seldom are .... I work hard and enjoy what I earn and buy ... at least I have a clear conscience over those that don't work and we all pay for in some way. Personally, I think that every benefit claimant should give something back to society in the form of community work. Is it right to be given money for nothing?

Joycie
No. They freeload on this too

Cautious Norm.
No, I pay that for them too.

Zzap!
If the benefit money totals over a certain amount of money then YES you do have to pay Council tax

As already said a REDUCED rate

Hello Tony,

Paying rents & Council Taxes can be a little complicated.

In normal circumstances the amount of money coming into the household and any savings there are is taken into account when deciding whether someone is entitled to Income Support, and if they are entitled, how much.

If someone is entitled to receive IS then they are normally entitled to 100% rent payment and 100% Council Tax payment, free prescriptions and free eye tests.

This normally also applies to anyone in receipt of Pension Credit, which is basically another name for Income Support, but is applied to anyone over the age of 60.

When someone reaches 60 in the UK they are automatically entitled to free prescriptions whether they get Income Support or Pension Credit or not.

I don't think they pay that tax, no.

cheryl d
they dont get free council tax but they get a big discount off it, i know someone who only pays 5 pound a week shockin when we pay the full whack

spectator!
All the answers thus far are either 'factual' or just another rant by people who think if you are on benefit you must be a free-loader. I am and I am not, if you intend come to the UK bring lots of money AND an open mind both are needed here
