Kev | Tax Audit question. I got audited. What do I do? |
I got audited and the IRS sent me a letter saying I owe $3,236!!! Its my first time being audited and I really don't have the money to pay this off. I was wondering if anyone knew if I'll end up paying the full amount. And what should I do? Go back to the guy who did my taxes or will he tell me he can't help me? Or should I get a lawyer and sue him? Please help. Any info is greatly appreciated. |

The firm you hired should be able to help you with this audit. If the back taxes are due to filling out the form incorrectly, they may guarantee to pay any penalties or interest, but the actual amount owed would still be your responsibility. If it's because you provided incomplete or faulty info, that's your problem.
If everything you claimed is legit and you declared all income, you'll probably come out OK. Just go in with all your relevant receipts, W-2s, etc. |

First, go back to your preparer with letter, so that he can review it, IRS maybe missing a piece of information. If you do need to pay more, IRS will work with you on payment, may have to pay additional fees.
As for hiring lawyer and suing him, you will have to prove that he was responsible for not correctly filling out YOUR tax return, and could end up spending $5000 (20 hours @$250/hr)or more in lawyer fees. |

Did you get audited, or did you get a CP2000 letter? If you got audited and were asked to prove some of the items on your return and you couldn't prove them to their satisraction, and they disallowed them, then you have to pay what you owe - if you can't pay it all at once, you can set up a payment plan.
If what you got was a CP2000 letter saying you owe a particular amount, read it carefully to see if you agree that you really owe it. If you don't understand it, go back to the guy who did your taxes and ask him to explain it. Getting a lawyer and suing him isn't going to help you any. Your taxes are your responsibility. |

if you do owe what they say then set up a payment plan when you file your taxes they will keep any refund you would have gotten you can also set it up where they take so much out you paycheck |

If you do end up owing, the IRS will allow you to set up payment options. If course, it comes with fees and interest, but it is much better to get it squared even with the added expense than try to run from the IRS which never works in anyone's favor.
Do what was already suggested. Start there and hopefully it's just a clerical error. |

I would start by going back to the individual who did your return to make sure he/she did everything correctly. As your paid preparer he/she should go to bat for you. You may have to pay the full tax amount plus an under reporting penalty. I would go to the website I have listed below to find out more options you may have. |

Audit? or did you receive letter that you under reported your income (cp2000)?
Since you had a tax preparer file your taxes take the letter you have and any documentation you have to the tax preparer to respond to the letter you received. You can call IRS at the phone number listed below when you go to the tax preparer and give IRS permission to speak to the tax preparer because he would know what question to ask and know how to correct the issue.
Why do you need a lawyer? Why would you sue? The tax preparer filed your taxes with the information you provided him, it is your fault if you didn't provide all the information to file a correct tax return, and you signed the return agreeing that all information was correct and included in the tax return.
So if you need a lawyer to sue yourself go for it! |

Don't panic. The IRS often sends out letters claiming people owe money that they don't really owe.
Take the letter to the firm that originally did your taxes for that year. He should be able to help you. |

Read carefully to learn why IRS says you owe $3,236. If you made a mistake, set an installment payment plan. It is better to pay even if you have to borrow.
If you do not agree with IRS, tell them.
The due amount will keep on multiplying. Interest 5% per year and non-payment penalty of 0.5% per month. When you set installment plan, the penalty rate becomes 0.25% per month.
