Tax Questions About W-2! Help! I Don't Understand...?
I am in my early twenties, trying to learn the ins and outs of taxes. It has always been confusing to me...

I received my W-2. I didn't work much of 2007 so my income is roughly $18,000. I believe I am supposed to fill out the 1040EZ next (as a single individual) - what is the deadline for submitting the next form? If my federal tax withheld was $1100 and my social security tax was $1100 and my state tax was $200 and my medicare tax was $260 and there's some other $100 tax "CASDI - SUI/SDI", factoring in the possibility of these new "economic stimulus" rebate checks, what kind of refund am I looking at? Or will I still owe? I have no idea, this stuff boggles my mind. I read that earning above $17,000 ups the rebate from $300 to $600 for an individual. Regardless, what should I do next, this is daunting to say the least. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!
Additional Details
Let me also add that my parents do not claim me, I am 22, and my father keeps bugging me to let him do all of this b/c I have sold volume in Herbalife products but he's been keeping track of the paperwork, so he claims he needs to "do it" to get all the information right. Any idea if that is a good idea to let him add in these more complicated adjustments from his home state or should I let the supplemental income go and file myself the easier way? Will the extra work make things better or worse? He says I am eligible for more refund under my volume of sales. I have no idea what that means so you can imagine how complicated this all seems to me. Do I need to file state taxes seperately? What are the forms/dealines for that? How can I not freak out with such crazy questions that I need answered?! AHHHH! Thank you all!

It depends if someone claims you. If you are a full-time student under 24, it is possible for your parents to claim you. That would reduce your standard deduction and eliminate your personal exemption.

However, if you claim yourself, then here is the breakdown:

Gross Wages: 18,000
S.S. tax: 1,116
Medicare: 261
Fed W/H: 1,100
Calif W/H: 200

Calculation: 18,000
Less: 5,350 Std Deduction
3,400 Personal exe
----------------
Taxable: 9,250
Tax: 993.00
Fed Refund: 107.00

Your state: I think you will owe, I have never done any tax work for california residents.

Expect to see back about $100 from federal.. and the rebate check for an individual tax payer is $600, but you won't see that check until around June. Don't bother looking at any other tax withholdings on your W2 other than federal and state.. all other do not need to be reported on any forms. If you are single, with no dependents and no other income besides a W2, then yes, use a 1040EZ to simplify your reporting experience.. and the deadline for filing taxes is April 15th.. if you have a refund though, your best interest is to file sooner so you can get the money. A CPA is not needed since your return is so simple.. don't waste your money. I recommend reading the instructions for the 1040 and filing yourself on a 1040-EZ or e-filing using the free edition of taxact.com.
Best Wishes!

The 'deadline' for filing both state and federal taxes is April 15 (it may 'change' a bit, but the date they'll be due will be announced in April if that is going to happen). The 1040 forms are the 'short forms' for filing your federal income taxes, and the 'taxes' they care about are the ones shown on your pay stubs in the 'federal tax' spot ... you CAN NOT take the 'Social Security' taxes off, but you MAY be able to subtract any 'taxes' you paid/will pay to the state from your 'income' when calculating your federal taxes. Once you have done your 'income' portion of the calculations, go to the 'tax tables' to find the amount you 'owe' ... if you paid more in, you'll get a refund, if you didn't pay enough, you must include a check or money order with your tax forms to pay what you owe. If you find the math too 'mind boggling' or you don't understand the calculations and how they work, I suggest you go to the IRS as ask them for 'help' in working things out. I do know that if you go to the IRS they will help you for FREE, and will do a 'good job' and the people will actually try to get you the highest 'refund' possible ... they may WORK for the IRS, but they are just 'people' after all, and even they must file income taxes, so they 'know the ins and outs' of the tax codes extremely well. Besides which, if the IRS helps you 'figure it out' and there is a 'mistake' made, they can't go after you (unless you are found to have 'hidden assets you didn't report) because the IRS 'did it' and not you.

Go to http://www.irs.gov/ and click on Free-File, chose a company and fill in the blanks. Its so simple that John Kerry could do it.

good grief don't panic!
Yes you fill out the 1040EZ follow the instructions it will take you about 5 minutes.
There are no other forms its one form get the booklet that goes with it, send it to the right address for your refund.
Don't worry about social security or medicare or casdi they aren't part of the equation. Just put in your federal tax withheld.
The state tax will involve your state taxes, if you need to file you might not check the front pages of your State tax booklet.
The rebates won't be sent out before May 1st it has nothing to do with the 2007 taxes.
Go to www.irs.gov for any other questions.

jason
There is NO rebates yet! Do your taxes and stop worring about a rebate that may even get held up in processes.

Go here and it will do it for you free for the FED under 20 for your state.

Go get yourself the federal Form 1040EZ and follow the instructions - its not that hard. You will also have to file a state income tax return, but do the federal first.

Your best bet is to call a local CPA, and have him give you the details on what to do.

restlessgirl
confusing, isnt? best thing to do is just let some income tax people do it and just pay them... its not gonna cost you a lot anyways..
