Tax Stimulus check only $600 for married joint return? Mad as hell?
My wife and I only got $600 total. The letter states something about a Federal tax liability being less then $600. We had $512 taxable income before deductions. WTF? I thought all persons who filed a tax return were eligible for the stimulus check? I guess that was more BS by the government. It is a tax credit based on taxes paid.

To ad more salt in the wound, our daughter was born 12-26-1990, so by 4 freaking days we also did not get her $300? She was 17 during the entire year of 2007. Last time I checked, 17 is still a minor, dependent child. How can they exclude a 17 year old? So is a 17 year old now considered a legal adult by our government?

Should I amend our return and have our daughter file her own "ADULT" return? Give me a break, what a joke.

You got $600 free money and you are complaining. The stimulus was a "rebate" program which normally means that you get something back that you paid in. In your case you got more than you paid in.

bostonianinmo
1. The rebate is based upon your tax liability. If your taxable income was only $512 then your tax liability was only $51. Your tax liability would have to be more than $600 to receive more than $600 and more than $1,200 to receive the maximum rebate.

2. Your daughter had to be UNDER age 17 as of Dec 31, 2007 to collect the $300 "kicker" for a child. The qualifier for the extra $300 is that she's a Qualifying Child for the Child Tax Credit and that ONLY applies if the child is UNDER age 17 as of Dec 31 of the tax year. The fact that she's still a minor is irrelevant. Whether she missed it by 1 day or 1 year matters not. And since your daughter CAN be claimed as a dependent, she loses out on the rebate even if you don't claim her. Amending her return to try and claim it will be seen by the IRS as a scam and they'll challenge it immediately. Additionally, the rebates are based upon the original return as filed, so amending her return won't entitle her to the rebate.

3. What the heck are you angry about? It's a FREEBIE from the government! You got $600 so you DID get a stimulus check! (I got $14.60 and my boss who earns nearly double what I do got $1,800 but you don't hear me bitching about it.)

Read up on the rules here: http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=177937,00.html Now get pissed at yourself for not educating yourself in the first place before posting your rant in a public forum!

Let's see. you paid no or next to no taxes, got a gift of $600, and are all PO'd about it?

Not sure where you got the idea that everyone who filed a tax return would get a stimulus check, many don't qualify. But you did, and got back far more than you put into the system, but are complaining?

be happy that you even got one

As with anything that has to do with taxes nothing is simple. Your complaint is one of the most common that I have heard. Most people think the ESP is $600 per person because that’s what they thought they heard on the news. When in reality it’s up to $600 per person depending on their tax liability, with a minimum of $300.
Unless your daughter is not a dependent and either had a tax liability or $3000 in qualifying income it would do no good to file a return for her. The additional amount for qualifying children is based on whether the child qualifies for the child tax credit.

1. Not all persons who filed were entitled to a check. The government NEVER said that all persons who filed were entitled to a check. If anyone did say that, it was BS by whomever said it, not the government.
2. The rebate was always only for persons who either (a) those who claimed someone 16 or younger, or (b) those who could not be claimed as a dependent by any other person. The government is not considering her a legal adult. They are only considering her someone older than 16, which she is. There are different age minimums for different things; a 17-year-old can drive in many states and a 20-year-old cannot buy alcohol. Being a legal adult does not confer all rights of 40-year-olds and being a minor does not confer all financial benefits of being 1-year-old.
3. No, you cannot file her own "adult" return. First, there is no such thing as an "adult" return. Second, and more importantly, she would not be eligible for a rebate, because you could claim her, which made her ineligible for a rebate, whether or not you did claim her. Again, the rebate was only for those persons whom no one else could claim.

The IRS website explains the stimulus payment. You evidently didn't read it very closely. Not every married couple is guaranteed the maximum $1200.

WHY be mad as Hell? It's free money!! You didn't earn it. YOU paid NO tax to support our government, yet they gave you $600 and instead of saying THANK YOU, you're steaming. READ the FAQs at IRS.gov. Government didn't BS, they set it all out in detail, but you didn't read it, just assumed you'd get the max because you wanted the max. Details were all over the news, the internet and yahoo for weeks and weeks.

Congress makes tax laws and they are frequently not common sensical. But rules are rules. Sports are the same way--back field in motion--come on.

At least you got the $600. If you had read any of the information about the stimulus prior to it coming out you would have already known all this.

Ms. Angel..
Be mad at yourself for not read all the information on stimulus rebates.
So big deal, you still got some FREE money. That is why it is not a good thing to give FREE money because no one is ever satisfied with what they receive. Then they try to scam the government to receive more.

You are the joke for not reading and understanding what you read.

Bet you people are all super happy now...since the child tax credit is next to nothing!!! If Obama would have let the damn tax credit expire, my husband and I would have gotten 500$ x2 for a total of 1000$; however he decided to extend it....how wonderful!!! Except he added a lot of "phaseouts", as they are called. That means your CTC (child tax credit) starts to DRASTICALLY reduce starting at 110,000$. That don't sound so bad right? Keep in mind that when the market plummeted, a lot of people relied on 401k to keep afloat and at the end of the year the IRS counts that as income. Which for us means that our taxable income of 72,000$ and a 401k withdrawal to pay off some bills puts us into the 25% tax bracket and we got a child tax credit of 600$ TOTAL!!! FOR TWO KIDS!!!! If Obama wanted to help folks by extending the tax credit, he could have reinstated it just as it was.... And to the guy PEED*off about the 17yr old & stimulus money, she could file, provided she worked, and claim herself and probably get a check but then you wouldn't be allowed to claim her. On another totally F* ed-up subject, I am really tired of supporting all the SO-CALLED "low income" people that cheat the government all year by saying that their baby's daddy don't help them, so they get FOODSTAMPS and MEDICAID and FREE LUNCH PROGRAM and GET IN TO PRE-K BEFORE EVERYONE ELSE, but at the end of the year....BAM!!! Baby daddy is back just in time to claim the three little kids and rack up the money!!!??!?!!? Where are the RED FLAGS that should go off at the IRS so that they can re-pay some of the benefits that tax-payers have provided for them all year long??? They don't open bank accounts so their money can't be accounted for, they get credit all over the place for big screen TV's, all the latest game systems, and OF CORSE we can't forget the BRAND NEW ESCALADE/TAHOE/SUBURBAN/300M/EDDIE BAUER EXPEDITIONS/GIANT-OVERSIZED & POWERED TRUCKS & and last, but not least, THE 22" RIMS WITH EQUALLY EXPENSIVE TIRES!!! So why do they still get all of their tax return??? Shouldn't that go back to the government to re-coop some of the benefits handed out all year??? Why are these "UNSUPPORTED" children's social security numbers not flagged on a tax return that is being filed by someone that supposedly did not support them all year long?!?!?! I bet if democrats got out of DC and lived in a regular, ungated community, with an average income of 50k (in Texas) they would see a whole new kind of "disadvantaged" people. I live in Corpus Christi, Texas and I see the abuse all around!!!!
