Tax Write Off - Newborn?
We just had a baby in 2008, we wanted to know if there was anything that we would be able to write off for her? Ex. Diapers, food, clothing, etc. Please let me know what we can and can't write off...We live in NY, if that makes a difference....Thanks

The only expenses you can write off for a child are child care expenses- expenses you pay to have someone care for your child.

Other than that, you get the dependent exemption and may be eligible for the EIC and/or child tax credit.

Babies are expensive, but you don't get much in the way of a tax write- off, sorry. :0(

Good luck!

Food, clothing, diapers are PERSONAL expenses. NO writeoff.

mama_sayed
Sorry. She is a dependent and you get the standard deduction for her. However, you may qualify for child credit or EIC. To find out more, go to http://www.irs.gov

You get to claim her as an exemption on your taxes this year, so you'll get to subtract more from your income before you calculate your taxes due. As far as deductions go, though, none of the things you mention (diapers, food, clothing) are in any way deductible. Personal expenses are never a deduction for any member of a family.

you get to claim her as an exemption. and You might get the $1000 child tax credit. the only ongoing expense you can ever deduct is child care expenses and you need from whoever is doing the child care (if you are not staying home with the child)-their name address and tax id/soc sec #

Daycare can be a write off. If you gave clothes to a shelter and have the receipt for it, its a write off. Other then that what you spend for clothes ,food and diapers you wont get anything back for it.

The only "write-off" is the additional exemption you can claim for her. Diapers, food, etc. are personal expenses and are not deductible.

You get an automatic $2000 deduction for your dependent.
