Your tax code increase actually means that the amount you get paid before you start paying tax on it has increased.

So you will actually be paying LESS tax than you were before!

Which is always a good thing :-)

You're not going to get a huge amount more, as your personal allowance before tax has only increased by £550, but you will save a little bit of money.

Margaret S
the code is the amount you can earn before paying tax.
the 522 = £5220
the 577 = £5770 BEFORE tax

I thought the tax code referred to the allowance you had before paying any tax - therefore your untaxed allowance appears to have gone up by £550 so quite the opposite!

Stephen A
No the tax code changed in your favour

Just the opposite. It means you now earn more before your tax is calculated. Your allowance is higher.

My tax code was BR for 4 years - meant that I was paying tax on everything I earned rather than everything above my allowance. Got some back at the end of each tax year though so almost like a savings account!

The code indicates the amount that can be earned before any tax is paid. So therefore you have just been given an additional allowance of £550.

As per previous answers:
522 = £5220
577 = £5770

To ensure that you have the correct code check the following website

The tax code is related to the allowance you get before you pay Tax. So your pay before you pay tax is dropped from £5777.00 to £5220.00 So you start paying tax when your annual pay goes above this. If it changes it mean your personal circmstances have changed and you have received a benifit which the Tax office is taking into account and reducing your tax free allowance

GIZMO THE CAT
No, it means that you can earn £5770 per annum before tax is deducted instead of £5220.

Gerald
Tax rates increase on only that incremental amount you earned in the next (higher) tax bracket. An extra dollar earned will never generate more than an extra dollar in taxes.

You might be confusing your paycheck withholding with your actual taxes. The withholding is at best a guess as to what your taxes will be at the end of the year. If your "guess" is high, you will get a refund. If your guess is low, you will owe.
