Tax credits - Any advise??
After renewing my claim with these idiotic people i informed them that my husband is not currently working and is in the process of being self employed but not as of yet - I gave them his earnings to April, and any earnings from April to the day he left his job - june - two days later i received a lump sum of £2k + - after ringing them up and querying this they told me the figure I had given of earnings from April to June was entrered as his total earnings for the year!! and the money i received was an incorrect back payment.
The amount that i was told i was getting per month is now incorrect, they can't actually tell me what im gettting per month until they have investigated their mistake.

I told them that in their handbook it states if the overpayment is their fault you may not have to repay this back - should i fight this??

This is the second year they have messed things up, the first time I got overpayed I didn't receive another payment for the next 2 years - stupid people

Just realised I spelt advice wrong - sorry who is stupid now!

why dont u renew it on the form rather than over the phone if u dont like talking to them ?? if the o/p is there fault then it will be remitted for u however they are only doing their job, and because 1 person made a mistake i think to generalise them all, is a bit over the top

sorry for that it may be a bit harsh of me, i work for the tax credit dept and admit i dont know where they employ some of my colleagues from either, if u call them back by now the change will have gone through for u and should all be corrected showing your future payments, for the average coc it takes 48hrs to update.
after they read your payments ask them if u have recieved an o/p which i will imagine they will say yes.
in your case, and only yours i would suggest you appeal against the o/p as if what u say is correct the money should be remitted for u, all calls are recorded and if u specifically ask for the note in which u made your change including the person who u spoke to, where they were from, the time and date of the call and put in your appeal form requesting clearly u want the call to be listened to, i would imagine it will be cleared for u, u can also request a copy of the call if u desire.i no many cases like your own where they will remit and clear the debt for u.. ba aware u do have to be very strong and do not accept defeat. they can and do go to court but if u habve the evidence to support yourself u will not need to worry at all. i will say for some people however that the mistakes are their own and although i genuinely feel very apologetic the advice that i have given here may not be valid in every circumstance, u have to be 100% clear that u specifically stated the facts and that u have picked it up straight away , if u didnt check your award when it happened they wiull throw it straight back at u. hope this helps u a little. they are not all stupid and most will want to help u as someones error makes the rest of us look bad :-) good luck

I have had these kind of dealings with Tax Credit, now when I make an enquiry I call back 3 times usually get a totally different answer every time and ask them to note down on my file what so and so has said. Best thing is to get CAB involved, they can be very helpful and may have access to telephone numbers that the general public do not.

I would fight it. I was overpaid 3 years ago and now i am having to pay it back at £30 per month. If you dont think you should pay it back then fight it. I have over £2000 to pay back, it will take me forever - It wasnt my mistake but they say as I didnt sort it out at the time I now have to pay it back! Great, low income families being made to pay back loads of money because of their mistake

I admit the tax credit system can be very frustrating . Some of the people on the call centre like any other place of buisness get it wrong or even don't know what they are talking about. There are many highly skilled dedicated workers there too that will bend over backwards for you and know the ins and outs of a very complicated system. The problem is the system is not as robust as it should be to handle the millions of people it's supposed to. That is down to the goverment and not the workers. It is so upseting to say no to someone who has no money when they want an emergency payment just because the guidelines we have to follow say no. To the lady on here who's on benefits and her payments have been reduced to £14 a week you can change this go into your local enquiry center or ring them. To the lady who is overpayed i would say give it back if you've still got it , the overpayment appeal procedure is a nightmare.

We have been told we have to repay an overpayment from 04/05 as we have had a change in circumstances (we actually have had no change at all). their whole system is in chaos and no two people give you the same answer, we have been fighting this since May and we are getting nowhere at all. Going to see our MP surgery this weekend hope they can sort it out for us. Hope you have more luck than us - keep us posted!

This is an ongoing problem, They do this all the time and people find themselves paying money back through no fault of their own, it seems theses people are grossly incompetent. You have to decide, if you need the 2k now and are happy to pay back at a fairly minimal amount then do you take it or do you fight it until they take it back. Personally I wouldn't be bothered with the battle therefore if you can do it I would put it in a savings account and generate some interest and when it comes to them claiming it back from you then whatever they take from you weekly/monthly take out of the savings account. That way you wont miss the money and you will even make a little.

I spoke to these idiots this morning and have over payed by £89.00. my new payments are £14 a week. Im not working nor is my partner. We had a change of circumstances which hasnt been actioned and I asked when it would be and they couldnt give me a anwser. £14 week to live on? that will buy a pack of nappies, some baby wipes and a a little food for my son. the stupid ***** on the phone didnt even ask if I wanted to pay back a lower amount per a week. Every time I call I get a different story. These people obvisouly dont give a ****. If I were to come into this country covered in boot polish and arrived illegally on a boat Id have everything given to me. all for FREE!!
