You probably will not have enough deductions to itemize?

Work gas? If that is gas for your car, it's not a deduction.

If you wear your work clothes elsewhere, then those are also not a deduction... That is, if you have a uniform that you have to pay for that you can not wear anywhere else. The problem with this is that their is a 2% floor. If you make $40,000... You can deduct any amount over $800.

And food is not a deduction either.

These all sound like personal expenditures... Which aren't deductible.

Just stick with your standard deduction.

Turbo tax will help you out there.

Keep in mind your commuting gas expense to and from work is not deductible. Also ONLY the sales tax on food can be deducted. Uniforms you have to pay for yourself and are not reimbursed by your employer can be deducted. Any clothing you buy and do not wear at work ONLY are not deductible.

For most people that do not have mortgage interest it is hard to itemize deductions. You would have to exceed your standard deduction of $5,350 in order to itemize deductions which are listed on a Schedule A. If you do not have a mortgage that you are paying on and from reading your question, I doubt if you will be able to itemize your deductions.

No, the items you mention are not eligible to be itemized deductions, so you're probably doing the right thing taking the standard deduction.

Some things that are eligible itemized deductions are mortgage interest and real estate taxes if you own a house, state and local income taxes, and charitable contributions. There are others - for information see the instructions for form 1040 schedule A.

If your total itemized deductions add up to more than the standard deduction, then you'd itemize instead of taking the standard.

you can deduct your expenses only if it is required by your employer - not otherwise.

Try Turbo Tax. It will go through all your possible deductions and show you your options in money terms.

Gas, clothes, and food are not deductible expenses.

Unless you are making mortgage payments or have unusually high medical bills, it is almost always more beneficial to take the standard deduction.
