Tax question.. my husband claimed 9 ALL YEAR LONG!!!!?
I have a question. I am filling my taxes, and with me alone, i would get $1,782 back.. then i put my husbands w-2's in and I now owe over 3700.00 because his retard *** claimed 9 ALL YEAR LONG!.. so here is the question, would it be in our best interest to me file by myself.. him not file until next year when we can claim our daughter on our taxes and hopefully get an earned income credit, to pay off the taxes? because if we do it alone, he will ow over 5000 by himself. my daughter was born on jan. 1st at 12:06am... so i guess i didn't push hard enough to get her her before 12am... so i can't claim her this year.. any ideas?

How in the world did he legitametly claim 9, without any kids? Do pets count in your state? anyway...
You should do a few things to protect yourself in the future and maximize your potential:
1) Get a CPA to help you position yourself for tax defence. A real honest to goodness CPA not that guy in the cubicle at the front of walmart. You want to find a CPA that actually knows the tax codes, not someone using software you could get yourself.
2) DBA or incorporate your own home business. (your new best friend, the CPA can give guidance on this.)
3)stop doing your own taxes let your CPA friend help you with this. You should be able to find a decent CPA that will work with you for somewhere between $400 to $1000.00 depending on how much of their time you consume. Dont sweat the cost too much, whatever you pay your CPA is your first deduction for your years' taxes.

Everybody says rich people dont pay taxes, well if that's true then find out what rich people do and then do it. One thing rich people do is use a CPA, another thing rich people do is they don't do their own taxes....

Here is the scenario your husband used.

First, most people just filing a standard tax return, and are fully employed, meet their tax obligation around May. What your husband did, most likely, was change his withholdings at 9, so no federal tax was taken out of his paycheck. I worked for a company who had many employees do just that. They claimed zero deductions through May so the maximum amount of taxes were withheld, then 9 throughout the remainder of the year.

9 withholdings will bring you to zero federal taxes taken out.

Not a good thing to do unless you're extremely talented in doing taxes. I don't know if it's legal, but as long as the tax obligation was met by May, I suppose it can be done.

If you fail to file a return and you owe taxes, you will be fined penalties and late fees. File as usual and pay the piper. The IRS will work out a payment schedule with you.

Ok, your hubby is not a retard for claiming 9 on his w-4. I claim 7, my hubby claims 3. It is only he and I, along with our 2 children! We do this because we want the $ rather than letting the IRS have it. Claiming 7 has the same tax ramifications of 10. We go long form, as we have mortgage interest, and many other write offs. I have a feeling you are using H & R Block or some home solution tax software. Don't do your own taxes when you have several deductions! Go see a reputable CPA. It may cost you $175-250 but is well worth knowing what you can and can not do and maximizing your return.

you cant just not do your taxes until next year because you owe the irs, there are fines and penelties for that, besides if it worked that way everyone would do it. yo can not file seperatly either unless you were split up and not living together for more than half the year. sorry to be the bearer of bad news but are there no deductions you have?

Hawkman
Use Turbo Tax or the like and try filing jointly and then separately to see what comes out better. I wouldn't not file or else you will owe penalties. Look for other deductions to offset the money he owes. Charities, you still have time to contribute to an IRA and write that off (if you have the cash), job hunting expense, etc, energy credits for a new water heater, windows etc. Why in the world would he claim 9 with no kids? Never mind, don't answer.

You are never better off not filing.

The penalties and interest on the $3700 shoot the amount through the roof.

File jointly and make payment arrangments.

Judy1
No, because he'll end up with a lot of extra penalties for late filing. If you can't pay what you owe by 4/15/08, you'll end up paying interest and penalties for late paying, but the penalties for filing late can be huge - don't get involved with that.

And besides, if his income was high enough to make that much difference in your taxes because he didn't have tax withheld, you aren't likely to get much for EIC if anything.

I assume he has changed his W-4 so you aren't in this same fix next year.

Jilly B
I'm not sure how he can "skip" paying til next year. That doesn't go over well with the IRS, you know. What was he thinking, anyway? Who would have told him to claim that much? You can file together with an extension...or you can request to make payments to the IRS if this helps...

Pink P
Wow, this is a mess.
You can file married but filing single (meaning you are responsible for yours and he is responsible for his). You can also claim your daughter, as long as he does not.

Now, with his, you will need to file. That big chunk of change you owe, your best bet is to call and set up a repayment plan with the IRS before the April15th deadline. But, at least it's on him by doing it this way and shouldn't come back on you.

You cannot "skip" a tax filing with out repercussions. It is possible to fail to file, and risk the penalty later. However, it is not advisable.
