Tax rebate really a rebate or truely a loan???
Correct me if I'm wrong, but based on the 2001(?) rebate, won't this new rebate being worked on actually lower your tax refund in april 2009? I seem to remember that I was supposed to get several hundred dollars back last time, but ended up with nothing because you had to subtract the "rebate." If this is true again, why is no one talking about it on the news? I don't want a loan. I'd rather get my tax refund in 2009.

If you wished to give away 150 billion this is the total reverse of anything that would really work. I know that it isn't a popular these days to say it but what would get me to feel better about my pocketbook and the days to come would have more to do with my employer getting a break with the cost of employment which has shot up a great deal here on the west coast.
When I consider my rebate check of $300 - $600 which is about 1/4 of the withholding of my paycheck from the first 2 weeks of 08 I don't find myself jumping for joy and would be lucky if it would afford an item made in China.
After all of that I am sure it will be taxable income so the iRs will take back about half of it in 09.
I am sorry but the Congress couldn't hit a target from 2 feet away with a shotgun and I think they missed on this one bigtime and are using the excuse that this fix must be done in a hurry.

I have the same question, but also another: Why were so many of us surprised about this in 2001? Why didn't Congress or the media inform us that, for most of us, the rebate was essentially an advance on our next tax refund? Again, nothing has been said about this 2008 rebate except by us grass roots people.

Good question. The last time was merely a loan. I haven't seen those details about this package, but the wording indicates that it might be the same thing. I guess we'll have to see how it shakes out in the wash.

I too would like to know how this
re-bate and switch will affect my
taxes next year.

Is this truly a rebate from what was
paid in taxes last year... or is it an
advance on taxes paid this year
and will have to be paid back on
the 2009 tax return ??

In 2002 was the rebate taxed
as ordinary income or was the
entire amount a tax debit ??

sleepycatz1972
yes. this is considered an advance on next yr's taxes and may lower your refund then. some people may not want to accept this rebate now because of that. if your taxes are already set so that you break about even on your refund each yr, this may not be a good thing to take right now as it will put you in the hole come next yr. (and yes, you have a choice in the matter, just like we did with the last one.)

It is a rebate.
It is also taxable, however, but it does not have to be repaid.

This is in ADDITION to your tax refund. Its not a one-or-the-other case. You get your refund AND the rebate.

v b
You won't be given a choice in the matter.

It was an advance in 2001. You didn't get the money twice, so it you got the money early, you got less at tax time.

The only difference is that if you didn't actually owe taxes in 2008, they might not make you pay it back.

Nobody knows yet. Wait unitl is gets passed by congress.
