portiaraylee | Tax refund anticipation loan now? |
Is there somewhere I can apply for an RAL now? I have a friend whose sister claimed H&R Block did hers during a special a few weeks ago, I thought you had to wait until your W2's were in. Is there someplace I can apply now using a paystub? I know they run credit checks now, not a problem. |

Block and Hewitt are giving loans now. They aren't really RAL's, since it's too early for that. You'll pay very high fees and interest, so they are really not a good idea. And you have to have decent credit to be approved. |

That would be great, if this is true. I could use my money now, rather than later. Let's check that out on H&R Block's website. Sounds like a plan. |

I think you would have to wait until next year. But - it would be nice! |

The tax year has not even ended yet! You cannot get such a loan until next year. |

The Emerald Card "line of credit" (read very expensive loan) is available if you go in person to an HRBlock office. Many offices will not open until after 1/2/2009. |

The whole idea of a RAL is not a good idea at all, and even worse if you're wanting to extend the terms of that loan any further than necessary. The interest rate they charge on those loans is atrociously high. It is possible that you will owe more money than you will get back from the IRS. Do you REALLY want to give a huge chunk of your refund money to H&R Block? |

If running your credit is not a problem, you should probably go to a bank for a loan. RALs will carry a higher interest rate. I have heard of RALs as soon as you get your last paycheck, but never one this early. I would guess they could have a decent idea what kind of refund you might get with a paystub from November, and they might start giving them out now. |

H&R Block is offering an Emerald Advance line of credit right now. Not all offices are open but there are several in every city that are doing this. If you were a tax client of Block last year, just bring a paystub less than 30 days old. If you were not a tax client of Block last year, bring in that paystub plus last year's tax return. The line of credit is for up to $1000 for tax clients and up to $350 for others. You have until February 15 to pay it back and almost everybody does so with their tax refund. |
