Tax - why hit the poorest?
Up to tomorrow we have had three bands of Income Tax in the UK, the first one being 10% on the first £2230, then 22% then 40% bands.

From tomorrow the 10% band is being abolished, and people will pay 20% on the first £36,000.

So who will that hit the hardest? Who will be paying a greater proportion of their wages in tax - those who clean our hospitals, care for our elderly and suchlike essential but low paid workers. The poor will pay more, but it will make practically no difference to the highly paid.

At a time when people are struggling with hugely rising prices, mortgage repayments, fuel bills and utility bills, isn't this yet another crass decision by an inept and incompetant government?

I think it is appalling, and disgraces a Labour Government. I have done some calculations, and the hardest hit will be people on about £8000 per annum. Their tax will rise by £160 for the year. People earning up to £5646 or over £16501 will be better off, benefits or increased tax graded according to income. Anyone earning over £30000 will be £300-£400 better off, the more you earn, the more tax you will save under the new scheme.
The only people with a vastly increased tax allowance to compensate are the over 65s. Women pensioners between the ages of 60-65, who are not entitled to the age allowance will be hit with a higher tax bill, too. I fall in this category, and object most strongly.
There is a petition about this on the Downing St website, but the last time I looked at it there was little response. I don't think poor people will realise what is happening until they get a reduced wage packet. The Government have put such spin on the reduction of Basic Rate from 22% to 20%.
I know it is a waste of time, but I am writing to the Prime Minister in protest. This scheme was announced when he was Chancellor.
Anyone who wants to see how this will affect them can look at www.listentotaxman, and play around with the figures.
The people who will suffer are all below the average British income, and under the official poverty level. I think the personal tax allowance should rise considerably. People earning £101 per week (this year), and £104.50ish next year shouldn't have to pay tax. It is true that this Government regards our personal assets as an assault on its entitlements. Folk who moan that the Government doesn't do anything about rising prices don't get it. It is a deliberate ploy to reduce our disposable income, and thus give the Government more power over us. At the next election, we must march with our voting crosses.

what a good idea, make an already too blunt income tax system even more blunt

clearly, the lowest paid will be hit hardest, as always. this country is a capitalist disgrace

gasgoon's 'reasoning' scares me

The One
The Government don't give a dam about the hard working person trying to make ends meet but they look after them self's with there £60,000 a year with extras and there second home that we pay for

Remember who put these taxes in place next election(Shortly) AND VOTE THE BLIGHTERS OUT... BUT THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU ALLOW HISTORY TO REPEAT ITSELF WITH OTHER PARTIES or you will be up to your neck in debt to the rich before you know what hit you, make your candidate beg for your vote make them plead for your vote, it is vital to THEM but it is definitley more VITAL TO YOU, make them abandon the lobby system where the priviledged get their way for a few drinks to the detriment of us all.
Spoil your vote it you have a chance to teach them a lesson in a hairline constituancy.... they will reel believe me... if they have missed their chance... because of a few spoilt votes.
Politics is full of fun when you have the whipping hand.
AND SOON YOU WILL.... USE YOUR VOTE
but
Please USE YOUR NOUSE.

Yes, you're right. It was a very stupid decsion, but I wonder if the personal allowance will be increased to compensate for the loss of the 10% band?

We have to pay so much tax because there are so many benefits available - the only answer is to stop paying out so much in benefits. People should only be allowed to receive benefits for first child and after that should have to pay all themselves - that would stop people having children they cannot afford.

Also should only be able to claim the dole for a year and then it should be stopped if you are fit for work - why should lazy people get paid for staying at home.

if we took those two actions we would not have to pay as much tax - it would save millions

the lowest paid always get hit by tax rises first that is the irony of a labour deceitful government.but the fault does not stop there low pay when put up against welfare hand outs make work not an option for many people so those people opt out of paying tax which puts more of a burden on those who choose to work and pay tax.i believe we should move towards the American tax system where every one is responsible for their own tax payments and welfare hand outs are no so large and you have to look for work or you live at a subsistence level.

Quite simple really.... there are more poor people than rich ones, so a tax on the poor produces more cash for the treasury.
Also the poor get more out of the state than the rich so they are receiving more of their tax monies back
Seems fair to me?
