You should spring a few extra bucks and send it certified with return receipt, that way you're guaranteed that the tax return got to the IRS and you won't get in trouble if the USPS loses it. Plus, the envelope will be postmarked right in front of you so you guarantee the postmark date, too.
Or, file electronically.

The law says a postmark by the 17th and you are ok.
Now if you want to PROVE that you mailed it by the 17th, you have to send it certified, (which costs 40c or so more), but then you have a receipt to prove you sent it on time.

POSTMARKED or MARKED BY POST OFFICE or OFFICE MARKED BY POST or MARKEDPOST BY OFFICE.
Any which way you want it marked, make sure its marked, no pun intended, by the 17th.
By the way, The US Post Office on 34th & 8th Avenue in New York City is open till midnight, Tuesday April 17th; weather permitting, of course. |
