I go through the irs.gov website and use the Freefile feature to find a company. I usually end up using H&R Block. You have to go through the Freefile to get it for free though. I have my refund direct deposited and it usually only take 1-2 weeks after i submit my tax return.

I filed my federal and state tax returns through my TaxCut software last Friday shortly before Midnight Central Time. I had my state refund in my bank account on Thursday already.

This was the actual state refund, not a refund anticipation loan.

I'm not able to get any information currently about my federal refund.

With all due respect, I don't believe gina's answer is accurate. Irs.gov does not do any e-filing, and as we're not even three weeks into the new year as of today, there's no way she could have gotten her refund "in three weeks."

Go to irs.gov and click on the free file link, it will bring up a list of online sites that will do taxes for free if you meet the requirements. All the sites listed are approved by the irs so you don't have to worry about them being a scam. I filed and should have my tax return back within 3 weeks. Orginally it said they 25th but the irs puts the lastest date on their site which says that my refund will be put into my account by the 12 of Feb.

I have filed my daughters tax return for the last 2 years on line. I went to the IRS site and picked one. It was www.olt.com, it went really smooth and I will file her taxes this year on the same site. I would highly recommed file on line. You can have it deposited directly into your bank account or you can have them mail your check to you. If you make below a certain amount of money it is free to file and just as good as any of the companies you would walk into and pay them to do it.

Gina could have been talking about filing LAST YEAR.
The IRS site does offer free e-file, but there is an income restriction and it gives you a choice of companies, so it is actually done away from the IRS site:
http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html
Here is the IRS link
It says refunds are possible within 10 days, with direct deposit.

I have done mine at citizentax.com for the last 3 years. It works great and is very easy. I got my refund directly in my bank account in about 2 weeks. If you have your check mailed I suspect it may take a little longer.

In the past I have used Turbo Tax online and H&R Block Tax Cut.
I find both are easy to use and very effective.
The normal processing time for the IRS is 8-15days. Beware if you have certain things in your return that you may not be able to file until February 11th due to last minute tax changes.
