Taxes refunds?
Hi, I have a question about taxes refunds, I'm not a resident in the USA, I live in Mexico but I usually go to Arizona to do some shopping according to the season, recently someone told me to keep my receips so I could ask for the refunds of the taxes that I paid because I'm not a resident. So I'm wondering if this is correct, that I can ask for the refunds of that money and if it's true, what do I have to do or / and where do I have to go? Thank you very much!

No, it's not correct. Arizona has sales tax, but not a Value Added Tax. Many European countries, and Canada, have taxes on purchases that can be refunded for tourists taking their purchases back out of the country, but the US doesn't.

I have never heard of the arrangement that you have mentioned.

Wrong. US does not have VAT - just sales tax. No refund.

you have to be a resident!!

I'm not an expert, but it seems if you came to that state to shop and that is the law there then you should pay like everyone else. I live in WV and PA does not have tax on some things, but if they come here to shop they still pay. THe nice thing is WV can go to PA and not pay. Twisted huh?

I have seen it done in Europe for tourists but I have never seen it in the USA.

If you pay income tax in the US then (under some circumstances) you may deduct sales taxes from your income tax return. Usually it is more beneficial to deduct your property tax (as you have to chose between the two), unless you purchase a big ticket item like a car, boat or expensive jewelry etc...

If you don't don't itemize your income tax return (and if you don't own property and/or have dependents you probably don't) it's pretty worthless.

You have to be a resident, citizen, or certified worker to pay taxes. For what you bought I think it would go into the taxes you pay for the nation of Mexico, not the US.
