Tesco taxing me ?
I earn £65 a week before tax and they are taxing me £70 at the end of the month, I am a sixteen year old who is also a fulltime college student only working part time at Tesco. Can they do this ?

From what I remember, Tesco isn't the best employer to operate PAYE correctly for new employees. I take it this is your first job, so you didn't have a form P45? Tesco need to do a form P46, and ask you to sign it to say it is your only or main job. You can also declare it is your first job, so Tesco should put you on a cumulative code number, and on that wage level, you won't suffer tax deductions. I think the problem with these big supermarkets is that managers at local level don't know the correct workings of PAYE on the employer's side, and they leave it all to payroll. Payroll inhabit their own little universe, and don't realise what is happening locally.
If you can't get any sense from local management or payroll, contact either the tax office dealing with Tesco as an employer, or your local one. Explain circumstances, and ask to be put on correct cumulative code. What they are proposing isn't emergency tax (that is code 543L, on a week or month 1 basis), it is to tax you at Basic Rate.

Is your tax code BR ?, if so this is emergency tax and they are waiting for your proper tax code from the Inland Revenue. This can take about a month to come through. you will get a refund in due course.

tesco doesnt tax you the government does. i think you are alllowed something like £5k per year tax free but you might have to file for a tax rebate which is always really fun.

The basic tax allowance in the UK is £5435 per year so you should not pay income tax if you earn less than this. At £65 per week you earn £3380 per year so you should not pay any income tax. When you start work the employer usually puts you on an emergency tax code which means that they will deduct tax but you can claim a refund at the end of the year. The link below tells you how to do this if your employer doesn't make the necessary correction.
Some of the deductions may be National Insurance - this should be stated on your payslip.

You should be able to earn about £100 a week before tax. Have you been issued with a notice of coding by HMRC (previously Inland Revenue)? If you haven't, Tesco are probably taxing you on what is known as emergency or week 1 basis, as they have no code to apply to your wages.

Contact your local tax office or have a look at the website below.

yes they can, it is up to you to get a proper tax code.
