The Curse of Labour?
Is it just the abolition of the 10% tax band or is it the little stealth taxes introduced? Small business corporation tax has been increased by 5% (20% up to 21%), the abolition of taper relief on Capital Gains Tax (now a flat 18% on all gains) - everyone I know has been affected - I just want to know YOUR thoughts!

Yes everyone is worse off with the Labour stealth taxes but do you think the Conservatives or Liberal Democrats would be any better, personally i think they are all as bad as each other and out of touch with the working citizens of this country they are supposed to represent.

Traditionally labour have taxed heavier than the tories but mainly because they have tended to be a bit more socially conscious than them, as far as services are concerned. However, I do remember things like fuel duty VAT and inflation through the roof during the last tory gov. Thatcher sold off everything (Industry, oil, closed the mines, shut down car plants etc) to be able to give tax breaks and when the larder was empty, well, inevitably labour got back in after the pound was devalued, sleaze and corruption couldn't be covered up any more and inflation went through the roof. Of course it was "New" labour and they sold their souls to capitalism, turning their backs on their traditional support, using fear and spin to hold power. Now there is very little to choose between them regardless of what they claim, I think even if the tories got back in power tomorrow it would be exactly the same, they would rob Peter to pay Paul and none of us would be any better off.... unless we are multi- millionaires!

There will always be an England
I agree with Fran our youngsters have been priced out of living in this country, especially the South East, the amount of tax we pay is crippling those on a lower wage and even those who earn quite decent money, how are young people and the older generation who have retired supposed to afford to run a car which lets face it is often essential not a luxury!

I dont know what the answer is but we need to make alot of noise to get Gordon out of office.

When Labour came into power in 1997 I thought they would ruin the country. Never in the wildest flights of my imagination did I think they would do so much damage to a once great and successful country.

I well remember seeing a shot of Gordon Brown, early on in his tenure as Chancellor, touring the Stock Exchange. All the dealers screens were showing a sea of red indicating falling prices, and Brown stood there grinning like a Cheshire cat - obviously totally unaware, or maybe unable to appreciate the situation. Totally unaware that the City of London financial institutions are one of our biggest earning 'industries'.

In my opinion he taxed us to the hilt, sold our gold reserves, then threw the money around with gay abandon with no future thought of possible leaner times. The man, IMHO, is a complete and utter idiot, untruthful and unaware of how ordinary folk have to live.

I have been through some very hard times - divorce etc., and it only by continually scrimping and saving that I am able to cope with the high cost of heating oils, petrol, food, council tax and continually watching food prices and where to get the best possible value for my money. It is becoming a continuous battle in keeping ahead of the bills.

I am due to go into hospital during the course of this year for a minor operation. I am dreading it because of the menu on offer - MRSA or C.difficle. Labour really have spoilt us for choice.

I remember the 1970's recession under Labour, growing up, and actually getting somewhere whilst under Conservative government.
At 21, I had a mortgage, albeit a 50% share with a housing association, and grew from that.
The property boom in the late 80's pushed me into buying a three bedroomed house, then my partner lost her job.
Long story, but I ended up working 90 hours a week, struggled for many years and eventually formed my own business in which I did rather well.
Then Labour came to power.

In that time since, I married her, divorced her, lost the house (with only 10 years to go on the mortgage), my business, my sanity, and am going bankrupt.
I don't even earn enough (note, no benefit seeking), to keep my booze & cigarette addiction, yet alone live.
The Labour government is indeed a curse.

I will be voting for the Conservative party because I believe I will pay fairer tax and they will be tougher on crime.

Years ago labour was meant to be the workers party, not any more, they seem to have run out off steam and the biggest mistake was to elect Gordon Brown and a bigger mistake was not to let the country vote for a new PM when Tony Blair left, I will never vote for Labour I just look at my 22 yr old and wonder how the hell will he be able to afford his own place. (heart breaking thought)

little stealth taxes!! over 550 and counting. 10p tax, big mistake, and no referendum, and a PM that looks like he is chewing wasps, and sounds like your maiden aunt.

I have to agree with Renoir. I doubt there would be a massive change with a different flavour government.

I'm interested in the questioner's use of the term "stealth tax". Not getting at him or her but this term has been used inappropriately so often I doubt anyone thinks about what it actually means. I've even seen it used about the change in the 10% tax band in the financial press (and the questioner does not make that mistake.)

The problem Labour has now is that many people will join a bandwgon without considering the facts. The 10% ban change was announced over a year ago. No one complained until recently. Why not. The maths are not that hard.

I think the strangest example of this bandwagon effect was when there were many protests about fuel duty. Then we saw people marching in the streets and barricading fuel depots as a protest against the Labour government. What had they done to trigger this? Well, they had NOT increased fuel duty, or to be more exact had only increased it by the rate of inflation.

You see, in 1992 John Major's government decided that we should be discouraged from using petrol and diesel for environmental reasons. He proposed that the duty be increased by a rate greater than inflation each year to achieve this.

When Labour came to power they continued with this (well, wouldn't you? It increased their income). Then they decided that this was hitting the motorists too hard so they reduced the increase to just the rate of inflation. So in real terms it was no worse than in the previous year. And people rebelled!

You have to laugh.
