Please help

and nobody has stolen my identity. the job is one that my brother worked. i dont understand the mix-up

I suspect your brother has used YOUR social security number for whatever reason. Otherwise there is no reason on earth for them to even have your SSN. Have you ever discussed this with bro?

And the amount of income that is being reported is that what bro makes and does bro get a w-2 himself that shows different numbers?

Call the company, can't believe you haven't if it has been a few years now, and ask them to fix it.

Also find a tax professional that is also an EA, or an Atty who specializes in tax matters and not just has a tax program he/she has a secretary runs taxes through as a courtesy for their clients, to help you with the problem.

Good luck.

ninasgramma
Don't you think it is a coincidence that your brother worked that job? Are your names similar and could he have given them your SSN?

I agree with the advice to contact the company and have them send you a letter stating that you have never been employed there.

fullblastus
I would say there is a strong possibility someone has compromised your Social Security number and I'm afraid it is incumbent upon you to prove there are two persons with the same number.

Judy1
Well, sounds like whether deliberately or not maybe your BROTHER has stolen your identity by using your social security number, or else is somehow confused over what number is HIS and what number is YOURS. All of the IRS reporting is done by number, and for some reason your number is apparently on his job.

But whatever is going on, it sounds like it's time to call the Taxpayer Advocate office at 1-877-777-4778. Their job is to help straighten out problems that aren't getting straightened out through normal channels.

Steve
It's possible that your brother has a similar SSN as you. That is what it is like for me and my brother and sister.

You will need to have an agent come to you and you will need to resolve this issue. Is the W-2 in your name as well?

i don't no what you can do but i all most would bet on identity theft you should all so check your credit report identity theft is easy to prove on your credit report and some one should be able to help you all so contact the company they say you worked for and ask them to provide a signed application the IRS is not big on helping people the work will be on you identity theft on SS# is big in the Spanish community and with long dark hair your id may have been targeted

call an attorney and definitely check your equifax!! they may have stolen your identity! happened to a friend of mine... they got it all straightened out and the person who did it to her is in jail now.... BTW they got a vehicle in her name... a 60k vehicle.... so act quickly and good luck sweetie!!!

since this has been going on for a few years and still the IRS is not satisfied, you will need to get a lawyer to resolve this - they will be able to cut through the red tape more effectively. I'd call your local Bar Association for a referral.

The burden of proof is on your side. Your best bet - contact the company that IRS is saying that you worked, get a HR personnel to contact the IRS directly (usually by a letter) to correct the error. Make sure you follow up with the HR personnel that he/she did what was promised and follow up with IRS.
