The IRS says I do not qualify for a rebate check?
Because my mother claimed me as a dependent. However, I am 19, make a substantial amount of money(or, 9,000 a year is enough for a 19 year old), and payed taxes. How would I not qualify for a rebate check?
Additional Details
I am a student however I do not recieve more than $600 a year from my mother. The first answer makes sense however it was ungodly pretensious. You do not need to be rude when answering a question.

Because your mother claimed you therefore she got money for you on her tax return.

Since you were a dependent your return does not qualify for a rebate.

Unless you were a student in 2007 or under 19 as of 12/31/2007, you cannot be a dependent. Otherwise, if you were a student and you did not provide over half of your own support, you can be claimed as a dependent.

There are two primary factors that affect whether your mom can claim you as a dependent. They are whether you live with your mom, and whether you provide more than half your own support.

Generally, if you live with your mother when you are not at school, then that counts as living with her for the entire year. That also becomes a factor in determining how much support you received from her for the year.

Any scholarships you receive are not included in calculating total support. However, any financial aid you receive IS included in calculating your total support.

I'm repeating this because it is important: Your mother does not have to provide more than half your support to claim you. The question is do YOU provide more than half your support. Financial aid you receive is an example of something that makes this distinction possible.

Hopefully this helps you determine whether you should be a dependent or not.

because you are someone's dependent. it doesn't matter that you made money, you cannot get a check if you are someones dependent.

Your mother claimed you. Which she wont even get a rebate on you anyway your 19.

aprillynn215
If you are claimed as a dependent you do not qualify for the rebate. Your mother does not qualify for the rebate for you either as you were over the age of 17. Long story short, you both lose out.

Yup, that's right, dependents aren't eligible. Period. That's how the law was written. Complain to your congressman and senator.

Tacgnol
You are claimed as a dependant.

Unless you were living on your own for all of the year 2007 she has the right too.

She doesn't owe you anything - by claiming you as a dependant she got a discount off what she would have had to pay in taxes by well over $600 - the answerer below me is an Imbecile.

Micki
Did you file a tax return? you should have based upon your income. Your mother shouldn't have claimed you as a dependent! She only gets 300 for you. If you filed your own return, you should get 600. She owes you.
