You should contact a CPA who specializes in tax (not all do) or an EA (Enrolled Agent). Both can help you figure your taxes for each year as well as represent you with the IRS and tax court, if necessary. Most will give you a free consultation to assess the time required & give some type of fee estimate.

Whatever you do stay away from H & R Block. You can file the returns yourself. Go to IRS.GOV and download the forms; you can even download previous years. Concentrate on one year at a time, starting with the oldest year. Do you have children, what other circumstances? I have done tax preparation for 36 years and can pretty much answer any question you have relating to taxes. You may be surprised to find out that you have refunds due you; especially if you have any children and are entitled to EIC & CTC.

Do it yourself & save lots of money.

I just helped a friend with the same problem. First gather all your data. The IRS can send you your W2's if you haven't held onto them. Also, the IRS will work with you to create a payment plan if you can't pay everything at once. There is free help for people you earn very little. If that's you, call the IRS and have them point you in the right direction (usually your local IRS office). If you make too much, either do your taxes yourself (you will have to buy the 2004 2005 2006 turbo taxes to do it by turbo tax) or use the paper format or you can go to H&R block or a CPA and have them fill out the forms. Any tax preparer can help you. The reason its good to go to a tax preparer is because they may able to reduce the amount you owe by knowing which deductions and credits you should take. A good preparer should ask a lot of questions.

You want to go to a tax accountant or a tax preparer. If you need to negotiate with them, you probably want to see someone who is an enrolled agent as well. A tax attorney would be to deal with issues like negotiating with the IRS when other options have not worked. They are typically a last resort or for very complicated issues.

How about H&R Block? If they can't help you, maybe they can point you in the right direction.

Call a local accountant and explain it to them. They can do it. H&R block could too if you have one nearby.
