t.arnold79 | The big gender question: why women get paid less than men? |
How does this work...my partner and I are both student and work part-time for Somerfield LTD. The problem isn’t that he earns more them me, it’s that HM REVENUE & CUSTOMS have said he can earn more than me before having to pay tax... so WHY is it different if we work the same hour at the same job? |

It is true that women get paid less than men that's because we still live in a patriarchal society who still think women are worth less than men.
Laws introduced 30 years ago to prevent this are still not adhered to. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7235482.stm
You should contact your local MP about the problem.
Before you do though make sure that it is not age related; when you are young different ages mean different minimum wages http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/Pay/DG_10027201
But this shouldn't matter because laws were introduced within the past year to cover ageism at work. |

I'd be very surprised if thats actually true.
Income tax is the same for everyone.
It may be the amount you can earn in a year and that you started at different times, or there is some other earnings being taken into account. |

Tax brackets have nothing to do with gender. Possibly he is getting a tax break for something you aren't... but that doesn't sound very likely given you sound to be in a similar situation.
I think someone has made a mistake / misunderstanding.
If you are both students and working for somerfield I would be suprised if you earn over the first tax bracket anyway (c. £5,250 a year)? |

Income tax is the same for everyone, taken over a one year period. |

Sorry, but that is not true. He may be able to claim additional allowances because his personal circumstances are different to yours. More info. needed.
EDIT. I notice that two feminists couldn't resist trying to turn this into an equality issue, when it clearly isn't. But, then I started to wonder why you have presented the question as women getting paid less than men, when it is no such thing, it is just a tax anomaly, which will be explainable. |

You must be mistaken.. There is no difference in the tax paid by men and women. He might have a higher tax code than you, for any number of reasons, and would be able to earn more than you before paying tax. Nothing to do with gender at all. Check with your b/f what his tax code ii.. it will be on his payslip. and compare it to yours. Have you claimed all your entittlements? |

Don't see how. Is it unionized? And, it's not a "gender" question. The sex is either male or female. "Gender" is a word coined by the sodomites who pretend that men are women and women are men. "Gender" in the dictionary means "a grammatical grouping of nouns and pronouns in to classes". |

Why do women get paid more than men?
(Anyone for tennis?)
Stop bitching about it and just accept your place in the hierarchy. |

If that is the case then i suggest you speak to someone like a union rep maybe. It should not be. Equality is pushed quite hard here in the UK and there are clear legislation about this exact thing. Your employer has a responsibility but so does everyone else. |
